I use Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash. It works great for me. Also, I don't recommend using a sponge. I use sheepskin mitt, others here recommend Chenille (sp) mitt. Make sure that you keep them clean. Good coat of wax makes washing easier. Have fun ...

Like 2k1, I also use Meguiar's Gold Class Shampoo. You can get it from Target for $9.99 (128 oz size).
As far as washing is concerned, your best bet is to use a good chenille mitt (I have 2 Vikings).

Also, you might want to adopt the 2 bucket method for washing.

Viking is the brand name of a cotton chenille mitt.

Let me give you a rundown on what's in my bucket:

2 Viking Chenille Mitts (One for upper panels, One for lower panels)
2 Sheepskin Mitts (One for fenderwells, One for tires and wheels)
Viking Tire Brush
Meguiar's Gold Class Shampoo

If you have a 2k2-2k3 GLE or you have rims with tight crevices, a wheel brush would be advisable. One brand of wheel brush is OXO, but they can be a little pricey.

Also, what other items are you using for cleaning tires, bug and tar removal, glass cleaning, cleaning wheels, etc.?

Well b4 i discovered the outside spicket i was just spraying the car wash saop on 'em and scrubbin the dirt off w/ elbow greese.....then id wipe the water spots off w/ a towel. I was planning on using the mit to clean my rims???? Maybe i'll pick up something else but i got chrome rims so i cant really use a brush ya know?

Yeah, one's made from chenille and the other from sheepskin! Okay, okay, seriously, chenille is a twisted "rope" like material similar to what's used on mop heads, only shorter for wash mitts. Sheepskin is exactly that - real sheep fur with the leather still attached. You should be able to feel and see it on the inside.

People seem to like these two types of mitts the most. Personally I lean more towards sheepskin because a)you can't fake it b)fluffs dirt out easier IMO and c)true 100% cotton chenille mitts are impossible to find where I am. Viking 100% cotton (make sure it says this) mitts are to the way to go if you want chenille. Some large auto parts chain in the US sells them but I can't remember which right now....

Try not to scrub a surface if you can, since this can lead to scratches. Better to just gently swipe the mitt over the spot several times instead. Most "normal" dirt I find cleans off pretty easily. Grease and bugs are harder to remove, but if something isn't coming off, deal with it separately afterwards.

I wouldn't use the same mitt to clean your wheels and tire sidewalls, and would get a dedicated mitt or dedicated soft brushes to clean the wheels and tires. It kind of depends on what shapes your wheels have and if you intend to use cleaners on them or just plain car shampoo though.
