rust spots

I have a 2000 Max and I was polishing and waxing my car the other day and noticed numerous rust spots all over the car. None of them were very large-about 1-2mm or so in diameter.

Anyone else have this problem?

As I understand, Nissan will only fix it if it has completly rusted through the sheetmetal before the warranty runs out. Is this correct?

This isn't due to paint chips. It is all over the car including the sides of the car and even the rear bumper.

I had this same problem. I had them checked out by serveral different body shops and they all told me that they are weather spots. They say all cars get them you just can't see them on certain colors. I notice that with a little wax and some rubbing they all came out.

Sounds like it could be tree pollen. There is no way the polyurethane bumper cover can rust.

I realize the bumper is plastic and can't rust, but there are spots that appear like rust. I'm thinking it might be tree sap or something that got on the paint and rusted.

I'm going to take some pics later today and try to polish them out.

I think you may not know what rust is. Rust is iron-based metal that is oxidizing and turns red and flaky.

Since the bumper, paint, and tree sap are not iron-based-metals, they can't turn to rust.

My dealer told me that it was brake and rotor dust.

Your car isn't rusting; metal particles (like rail dust) deposited on your car are rusting. They can be removed with a claybar.

Ranger hit it on the head. That "rust" you see is rail dust that embedded itself in the paint. What you might want to do is get your paws on a good claybar such as Clay Magic to remove the contamination from your paint.

After that, you might want to get a decent polish to remove imperfections and then wax ( or get a polymer like Klasse) to protect the finish.

I'll confirm the 'rail dust' thing.
I had the same thing happen to my white Accord and I thought how the fukk can plastic rust?? The clay bar took care of it.

A clay bar will easily take the rust spots out. Do NOT attempt to polish the rust spots out. You don't want to slide the tiny rusting particles against the paint, it will scratch/mar the surrounding paint. Use clay first, then polish the area when all of the rust spots are gone.
I just detailed a silver 2000 Jetta yesterday; the owner couldn't believe that all of the rust spots were gone. He thought they were permanent. The car had dozens of rust spots along the doors on both sides, and plenty more on the back bumper.
Answer to your problems: CLAY BAR

I have a spot of rust on the top of the driver's door. I also remember seeing a horribly rusty spot on the floorboards under my seat. Anyone else ever see this? I'm hoping it's not one of those cars that sat under water for 10 days in a hurricane, ya know? I'll have to go check that again... make sure I wasn't imagining things...
