Help - Pine Sap Removal!

Hey everyone... I hope this isn't too retarded of a question... but I got a good amount of pine sap on my hood (I kno, dumb@$$ for not noticing the pine trees when I parked my car) and was wondering if anyone had any cleaning recommendations. With my old VW I could use Goof Off, but I'm not sure how the 5th Gen's paintwork would react to that (since I heard we have pretty "weak" paint on our cars)... lemme know if anyone has experience with this. The sooner I get that sap off the better! Thanks!

You could use some 3M adhesive remover or the bug, tar and sap remover that Stoner sells.

Thanks... I've only tried a Turtlewax Bug and Tar Remover and it doesn't get everything off.... I actually tried using a little Goof Off on a small spot and it works well but I'm not sure how much of that I wanna use on the car... I immediately washed out the area after using it...

The alcohol is strong. I'd suggest 3M's Tar and adhesive remover.

By a little bottle of concentrated windshield washer fluid from any automotive store(not the big bottle, the little bottle that you have to mix with water). It will only cost you about a $1.00 and with take the sap off with ease, guaranteed! Just put it full strength onto a rag and wipe the sap off.

WD40 sprayed on helps soften tar and sap up.

Thanks for all the tips. I ended up using Goof Off and got all the sap off the hood.... then I washed everything thoroughly to make sure there was nothing still lingering on the paint (only to get shat on the hood by some damn birds). Anyways, next time I might try the windshield washer fluid way, that sounds the best.

Btw, WD40 didn't work last I tried... I think that only works if you get the sap almost immediately after it hits the car.

dawn works real well, though dilluted with car wash. Work the area, do not rub too hard, it will loosen it up. If you rub very hard, it will create very dull nasty swirls. After this, your car will absolutely require heavy duty polishing. I had this happen to me atleast twice, and it was really, really bad. I had my entire car covered. Also, the longer it stays on, the more it will eat at your paint, so you need to get sap off immediatly.

After a few days, it leaves a small area where the paint rises up, and it looks like crap!

Lesson: Never park near a tree, under a tree, or in the general area of a tree during a windy day.

Glad you fixed it.

Glad it helped you out! Definitely try the windshield washer fluid next time. It's a trick i learned about 4 years ago and it works better than anything else you can buy.

If all else fails, use mineral spirits to soften and remove the pine sap.
