Since our cars do not have a distributor, the only thing I would advise you to do would be to block the air intake (stock), or put a ziplock bag around the air cone filter if you have one.

I recommend using Gunk Foaming Engine Brite.... let it sit for 5 minutes and use a brush on stuff that is really gunked up.

And tell your dad he just had a freak incident that probably wasn't even related to watering down his engine. Hell, I've used Engine Brite 3 times this summer without a hitch--don't worry about it.

Newer cars are very different from older ones in the fact that everything is basically sealed off from water. Just make sure you cover up the air intake and alternator. Heat up the engine until it is warm not hot to the touch, then spray down the engine and spray with simple green. I like to use a soft flared wheel brush because it can help get down into crevices easily. Make sure to keep rinsing though or you will ruin your progress. Work from top to bottom so dirt doesnt go over your clean areas. After you are done, rinse and dry as well as you can. Then you can turn on your engine again...the heat will evaporate any remaining water. After that you can go in by hand and polish any parts you need. Hope that helps.
