Windshield specks.

After 160,000 miles, my windshield looks pretty sandblasted. Even after intense cleaning with soap/water, or Stoner's Invisible Glass, or Windex, you can still see these tiny nicks all over. It drives me crazy in direct sunlight, or city driving at night, when the nicks catch the light.

Anybody had success in getting rid of these? Is there a product that will fill them in? Is there a product that will polish the glass around it so that it smoothes out the nicks?

I checked the stickies and saw a how-to about polishing glass with a Porter-Cable rotary and Autoglym glass polish. Does that rub out these nicks?

I doubt it will.... I would think you at least have to wet sand it, then polish it up.

The Autoglym is more of a cleaner type of polish as it will remove water spots and maybe some minor imperfections. If you are going to try that, you might want to consider using the yellow cutting pad.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't even know what "wet sand" means. Is this something a professional glass shop would do? Can I do it with a rotary sander? Has anyone here done it? If I tried it, my bet is the windshield would end up so scratched as to be unusable.

Years ago I did put a new windshield in a car, and it looked so good for the first few months. My driver's view was so clear it just felt like a much nicer car, especially at night. Right now I'm just looking for a cheap solution.

Is there a product that might fill in these specks? They're really like little chips in the glass. Would a paint polish that supposedly fills in scratches on clearcoat work on glass?

Maybe I'll make this my new project, go to a professional glass shop, and post before and after pics.

Sorry guys but those things dont "Come off"

They are little chips from road debris. The only way to get ur window clear is to replace it... As far as I know anyway.

only way to get rid of this is to get a new windsheild... prob not what u all wanted to hear, but lifes tough sometimes...

PS... w/ certain insurance plans a windshield is covered at no cost to u if its broken... w/ my other car, my windsheild was "accidentally smashed" and it was covered by my insurance w/out any effect on cost... just a hint

Thanks for the replies. It still seems like there should be a way to fill those chips in with some clear material, or polish the glass enough to smooth out the edges so they don't catch so much light. Maybe I'll try some scratch remover on the glass, though I'm afraid it might make things worse.

EDITED TO ADD: I just called several glass shops and they said "no way." I still plan to try some sort of polish or scratch remover on a few spots to see if it makes any difference.

Some other insurance plans will let you replace a windshield every year if you claim its in bad condition

I found this thread hoping for an answer to this problem and just my luck - the only solution is replacing the windshield... my insurance doesn't have any windshield replacement plans...

We need a GD on cheap windshield replacement!

How much did a new windshield cost? Did you get a new gasket, too?

I didn't want my new 6th gen. windshield to end up looking like my 4th gen windshield, so I splurged $150 and had the windshields of both cars treated with this "Diamond Fusion" coating. The glass is now super smooth, and you really can drive in hard rain while barely using your wipers.

The reason I splurged was to protect my new windshield. Because the coating is much harder, and because the glass is now so smooth, it is supposed to help stop those little nicks from forming. On the 4th gen, all of those little nicks are still visible, so the treatment didn't fix that.

lol sounds like an expensive bottle of Rain-x to me

i have the same exact problem im sure it could be wetsanded and polished out but i am nowhere near good enough at wetsanding plus i dont have anything that i can use to polish it out so im just gonna deal with it..

i actually put a claybar to mine and it turned out i had a ton of imperfections and stuff along with the road chips

I have the chips problem too and it is sooo annoying. I spend hours going over the windshield with Invisible Glass, 0000 steel wool, claybar, and rain-x and it still looks crappy in direct sunlight. I am really considering having it replaced. Anyone know if State Farm in NJ has a windshield replacement policy??

i was the victim of a local body shop leaving the wiper pivots and arms on the opposite sides ( DS to PS - PS to DS ) which caused a nasty arched scratch when i used em on a rainy day. swapped the wipers myself and stuck with a "frown" of a scratch... anything to rub that off? Its not even deep enough to stop my nail going over it. Its right on the surface.....

I haven't tried it but I heard vinegar removes those ring type hard water/acid rain spots.
