Ouch. Was that a bad paint job that just started to peel or did it have a little help?

1. Depends on how big it is...Its a zoomed pic so we can't really tell how much of the rear is like that...

You might be able to just sand down the spot and possibly touch up paint it and it will look decent but i would sand all of that down.

you can sand and paint that area, but that gold color is incredibly hard to color match. it's also going to be much more difficult because of the cracking paint.

your best bet is to repaint the entire rear bumper..

When it comes to cracked paint, always repaint the entire panel, otherwise you risk having the paint flake off later. Not to mention its not very easy to blend that area if its cracked that bad.

Just make sure the body shop guarantees the color will match the paint that is currently on the car. Usually some shops will warn you that the color will not match the rest because it is a different brand/model paint, older vs. newer etc. If your car was a simple white or black it should be ok but since it's not, the color may be more difficult to match. That is, of course, if you care about that sort of stuff.
Bare minimum: re-paint the entire bumper...nothing less. Do it right the first time.

Ouch I would repaint the whole bumper.

I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but since this is paint related. But I just bought my buddies 96 max. It has 97 front bumper, sarona grille, stillen lip and I am going to be adding the Type II spoiler.

I was wondering how much you guys thought it would cost to get these little pieces painted. There is a body shop down the road from me, I will be finding out an estimate there I just don't want to walk in "blind".

I feel ya....I backed into my roommates car a little while back and the end result was about the same as yours. It was just enought to crack the paint and cause it to start chipping. I had no choice but to have the entire bumber cover repainted. I know this is not what youre trying to hear, but if you want it done right, you really dont have many choices. The color of my Maxima is Polished Ti, which is rediculously difficult to match, but it came out well. Finding a bodyshop that gives lifetime warrenty on all work was pretty important to me, just incase they didnt match the color well the first time through. It ran me a little under $500, which is not a cheap job by any means, but I was totally satisified with the job. Bad news is that I just got rear ended last night coming back from Lowe's. SOOOOO...there goes the bumper cover, trunk and who knows what else. And I just claybared the whole car last weekend and it was looking awsome!....Anyhow, good luck with your repairs. Beautiful Maxima by the way!
Mike
