Ripped Leather Seat
Ripped Leather Seat
I just ripped my rear leather seat a good 3" a few days ago. Are they any guides out there for doing the repair yourself. I took it in to get an estimate and they wanted $150. Thought I would check out other options first. Thanks.

Sorry I can't help more, as I don't know much about leather. I can tell you $150 seems like a bit much to me, though. You could probably almost get a whole other used seat for that much.
appologize for whoring your thread, but i saw it and was hoping to get an answer here, since i have the same exact issue...
someone told me about some sort of adhesive that "melts" the leather at the cut and bonds the two edges together. anyone know anything about this?
EDIT: I searched around the web and there are TONS of different products, for example this one: http://www.leatherrepairkits.com/repair_kit.htm they claim to be the best...but who really knows?

I have some small tears in the driver's seat bottom just under and outside of where your left thigh rests. I took it to a local professional, and they want about $150 to repair it as well. Apparently, my car has leather "seating surfaces", which means the inside of the seat and back are leather and the rest of the seat is vinyl. My tears are in the vinyl part, and the shop I talked to said, in order to be done correctly, the entire vinyl part should be replaced.
They also told me that if I just wanted it to look good (as if I was selling the car), there are numerous "over-the-counter" products that would do a decent job, but would not last.
I guess my point is, if you want it done correctly, it's going to cost you! Good luck!

Repairing leather seats depends on the condition of the tear. It can be a DIY project if you take your time. In fact, I just slightly tore my back seat on the surface which looked horrible. It wasn't a complete tear into the seat, but just enough to rip the suface peeling back the leather. I fixed it myself, and it looks flawlless! What I did was took some 1500 wet sandpaper and sanded over the tear. The most important thing is to keep it wet while sanding. Don't sand too hard, or you'll slightly fade the color (especially black). If the color does fade, then you must buy a repair leather kit to mix the shade of color to match your seats. This kit also repairs major tears. Now, this is accomplished buy gluing a grained, patch material over the tear. Once it's glued, a heating tool is applied and must be moved in a circular motion for about 3-4 min over the repaired area. Sand if neceassary, and mix up the shade of your color of your seats from the kit and your done!
