How to clean black rims?

I had my black Volk rims stored in the garage over the winter. Now i went to clean them today while it was nice out and i cant seem to get them clean like they once were. Any tips for cleaning black rims? I have only used Meguiars Hot Wheels to clean. That is after i washed them with soap and hot water? Am i doing anything wrong? I see swirls after i wash them. Do i need to wax them, even those they are alloy? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

treat them like a body panel.

Wash>Clay>Polish>Wax> enjoy

I see. So i can use Meguiar's 3 step process for this then. Is there anything i should watch out for when cleaning black rims? I'd hate to ruin these bad boys. Like do i use Dawn soap first on them? or just use regular car wash soap for the first step? Thanks! Do i wax the polish lip? and what about the inside of the wheel? Do people wax that as well?

What mdsmithers said, but you need to use a sealant instead of a wax because a wax will melt off the wheels quickly. For your polished lip, get some metal polish. For any tar, use a bug and tar remover. If car wash soap isnt working for you, use a degreaser.

I see. The products i have now are Step 1 Meguiars Paint Cleaner, Step 2 Meguiars Polish, Step 3 Meguiars Wax. Which of these products should i use and which should i replace. Like u mentioned the wax, i should use a sealant instead. Which sealent do u recommend. Can i still do use the Step 1 and Step 2 products, followed by the sealant? Lastly do i wax the inside of the rims, or just the front face?

Should be just like cleaning the body. Just tougher because of road grime.

Good Point about the sealant, I've been using Klasse SG with good results. I clean my wheels about every two days, I've found a quick wipe down keeps them clean and makes the car look cleaner even if just the wheels are clean. I have used wax though and it'll do the job.

What makes a sealant different from a wax? What sealant would you guys recommend? Does meguiars make one? Sorry just don't want to mess up my rims. Thanks again.

Meguiar's makes a sealant (#7).

Sealants are different from waxes in that they provide a greater level of protection. A good example is Klasse Sealant Glaze. If someone were to use Klasse All In One and Sealant Glaze, the finish would be protected for 6 months or more. Waxes only last a month to a month and a half. In addition, sealants can handle the heat that wheels can throw out more than waxes will. Klasse is rated to handle up to 475 degrees, IIRC.

awesome thanks for the info. lastly, is it okay if i use meguiars step #1, the paint cleaner.
simplegreen->wash->clay->meguiars.step1-paint.cleaner>meguiars.step2-polish->some.sealant

does that sound okay?
