Ruining my clearcoat?

Hey guys, I was talking to my friend tonight about waxing and all. He asked why I wash and wax my car so much and proceeded to tell me that everytime I wash and wax my max that it brings down my clear coat. Is this bogus or true? I've never heard this before.

Only if you are washing with sand paper.

Washing and waxing will not shave off any clear coat if it is all being done by hand. The only things that will actually shave away clear coat is when you use an abrasive polish/compound with a Rotory or DA buffer to level out scratches.

I was told that once too. Needless to say, I slapped myself in the face just because I heard that.
