Painting Dashboard - Materials

There's a How-to on VQpower.com about painting your dashboard to look like this :

Well, it suggest to use Dupli-Color High performance Wheel paint, and not where to find it, since its a short right up.

I went to Home-depot, All American, True-Value, and a Auto-paint store nearby, none of them carried it. The auto-paint store didnt sell spray cans so that cancels them out.

From the people who already did this mod, Where did you find your Dupli-color wheel paint? Or what substitute did you use? He suggested to use that specific one because its very durable and prevents cracking/chipping/etc.

Thanks a bunch.

EDIT : Oh wow, i cant believe i forgot to check auto-zone. Brb, but if you have info, post for future users who are intrested in the mod.

Kragen carries ALOT of Dupli-color Spray paints. I just picked one up and about to start my project.

Auto-zone did NOT have it. Grrr.

*******************

On the Painting Dashboard modifcation :

http://www.vqpower.com/v2/modules.ph...howpage&pid=55

He has a manual Climate Control.

I have a Auto-climate control, and when removing it, there is a black tube that connects to the back-right side.

Any tips on how to remove it?

And what is it for?

Any duplicolor will do, I recommend the following:

(1) 320 grit sanding to remove OEM finish
(2) Duplicolor Primer (the grey stuff) to level out any sanding sratches and for proper paint adhesion.
(3) 500-grit wetsand
(4) Acetone wipedown to remove all sand/oils
(5) Paint with color of you choice
(6) Duplicolor clear coat

...you could probably bypass the clearcoat setp if you went with the caliper paint, but I highly recommend taking the aforementioned steps for preparation .

Good luck!

Probably not. Grits that high are used for body sanding and headlight polishing, etc.

Right. Like DJ said, higher grits are used more for polishing...NOT for removing any existing finishes. Anything under 500 grit will suffice, although 320 is really ideal in this situation...anything lower will really cut into the surface and anything over is going to take an unreasonably long period of time to do.

The only Primer i have is Rust-oleum Professional Primer. For use on bare metals previously painted or sound rusted surfaces

I really dont want to run out and buy another one since i have like 3 cans of these in my garage.

Is the primer phase really necessary? it didnt state it in the How-To.

Also, Would the primer i currently have work on plastic?

ok,I started painting the pieces without primer.

I've done a test sample on the passenger window controller trim, and it looks great. It looks Smooth, but it Feels ROUGH.

Is it supposed to be like this?

Any suggestions? im kind of short on time so reply ASAP.

Impatience never got anyone anywhere. Should have primed. To get rid of the roughness, wetsand, but don't be surprised if it takes the paint right off.

Good luck

Metal primer...it will work better than nothing, but it won't work like what you want it to work like. Cough up the $4, seriously.

Yea, Thanks guys. I know, im stubborn, haha.

Well here's a short update :

I completed spraying the side door panel parts w/out primer. They turned out good, but a lil rough to the touch.

Now, i just bought Dupli-color Sandable Primer for about 6$. I'm going to start the head piece and the gauge part now.

Wish me luck.

Any other tips for priming appreciated. Can never be too prepared.

UPDATE :

Parts painted :

HU trim
AC Vents
Door handle trim front/rear
Map Light unit
Coin holders
Front/rear window switches
mirror switch trim
Glove department handle
Gauge trim

Could've done a better job if i hadnt rushed it.

Final conclusion :

Ended up with a cool looking interior. All my friends are going crazy over it, asking me 100's of Q's.

Bose unit cd player doesnt feed after the paint job, god knows why...

Thats about it.

All you need to do now is fix the e brake boot... and slap some polish on all the black. Especially the steering wheel. Good job though man... it came out really nice.

i have been thinkin about this vs purchasing a dash kit.

i just want to know if there is any paint that doesnt have those sparkling metalic stuff in it. just a FLAT paint + clear coat. any ideas? IMO the sparkles make it look cheap. i want OEM-ish finish

What do you guys think about painting the Driver/Passenger speaker covers Silver?

Mine either have paint peeling or some type of white drink on on them because it looks like its chipping.

I might just re-paint them black.

Opinions.
