Bumper Peeling...

So my bumper had a patch of paint missing right next to the license plate and I brought it to the body shop today. The shop tech who has been there 37 years told me that the paint peeling was inevitable, and eventually the bumper would need to be repainted. The patch was about the size of a quarter and after taking tape and trying to peel the excess back...it seemed endless. Now its about the size of a 1/2 dollar and looks worse. He applied some black paint with a brush to try and prevent it from spreading...but I don't think it will do the job.

I am considering buying a gloss black paint and taping off and spraying the small area that he painted with a spray to try and seal it from water. It probably wont match the car, but it will look better than it does now. I am also considering buying a 3M film tape and putting it over the bumper to protect it. What do you guys think?

you should just get touch up paint and use a razor blade to cut around that whole bubble and use the touch up paint as a sealant, that's what I did in a few areas on my car

Yeah that is what i was thinking...just cut away the old peeling paint and buy a can of OEM matching spraypaint. Only thing is that how do I remove the paint the guy at the body shop painted on my car today?

you don't...just get a razor and slice off the peeling crap, and make sure to get the brush on touch up paint from the stealership.....that way you can perfectly "seal" the air instead of just spray painting it and getting over spray all over the car

my 2 cents

Eventually you're going to have to get it repainted. Do you not have the funds right now to repaint it?

I hear ya', but I totally think you could get it done for half that.

Maybe even less if you went to Maaco.

Yah, I think its possible. I had my rear bumper repainted a couple months ago due to a minor fender-bender. I don't remember the exact number, but it was around $200-$300 and that was at a reputable chain location. If you were go to a smaller shop, I think you could find one for pretty low. It doesn't hurt to at least ask around.

Honestly it is not worth the money to me right now. I would rather put the money into a new y-pipe or other parts of my car. The car has enough flaws already and this one doesnt bother me too much. Eventually...probably not for 3-4 years, but i would like to remove all door dings and repaint the entire car. Get it back to factory look. Anyways...here is what the patch looks like now...

He missed a few spots and I may bring it back and ask him if he can touch up the edges...but it looks better than the flat black that was under the paint. Sorry for the glare of the gray car in the background...the flaw is just to the left of the license plate frame.

Look into using some Langka on that - it will probably smooth it out a bit better than it is now,
