Ahh!! What the hell is this stuff?!?

When I bought the car last year it came with this substance on the speedometer:

The guy said he was cleaning the dash and some of it got on the speedometer housing. He told me what it was but I forgot...I have tried clay bar on it but it did nothing. It feels smooth, like its worked into the plastic. When I take a wet towel and apply it goes away for 5 seconds but then comes back...any idea what this is and more importantly how to get it out? thanks

whatever it is it looked like it etched the plastic, i would say either try a paint polish, or take it out and sand it down like people do to clear up headlights

I'd try a plastic polish like Novus 2. Paint polishes will probably make it worse because they're more abrasive and the plastic is 'softer' than your paint.

hah ya you get it if you use any vinyl cleaner or anything like that on the clear plastic. i got some on mine, leaves a white haze, just used some plastic-x and it looks brand new. takes out any of those fine scratches too.
