Another headlight thread

Just wondering if it's advisable to wet sand and follow up with http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...6_T|GRP2050___

Just an idea I've been jogging.

This is common practice with MR2 tail lights. Just make sure you keep the sand paper extremely clean while working. It's very easy to make deep scratches in the plastic. However, whether or not it can stand up to the heat from the headlights I cannot comment on.

ouch the heat is right. headlights basically just have a clear coat that wears over time then the oxidation starts, correct? Instead of polishing every month I'm trying to think of a more permanent solution.

That's correct. The housings will have a coating on them from the factory. I ran a detail shop for ten years. Probably one of my least favorite things to do was wet sanding headlights in an attempt to blend the peel line from the clear coat.

Looking back on it I do remember someone offering the option to wet sand and clearcoat headlights. The majority of the work I saw done looked like crap though. A ton of fish eyes. Probably just a result of poor prep work. We would normally just wet sand and polish them with a rotary buffer but like you that only lasts so long.

I just picked up my 3rd Max, a 5th gen, that has faded headlights. If I don't pick up a set of retrofits first I may try this myself.

Why not try wheel clear by either Duplicolor or Rustoleum? That has to withstand some sort of heat.

Or just a clear engine enamel. It should adhere to plastic just fine.

Either or should work. Engine enamel probably withstands heat much better.

Check out this thread.

Apparently, Brasso, cleans the headlights pretty nicely, making them look almost brand new. I assume, they apply a wax after the Brasso cleaning, but I am not sure. If anybody knows, do reply.
