Rain-x causing hard water spots???

I recently had my windshield replaced and immediately applied a coat of Rain-x. I haven't used Rain-x in a while, and the bottle is probably almost 10 years old. The water still beads like crazy, but I noticed that even normal rain leaves hard water spots that won't come off by just spraying wiper fluid, it needs a little rubbing by hand.

I would think Rain-x would prevent hard water spots, and began to wonder if the new windshield is somehow lower quality and allows water spots to form more easily. I'm going to remove all the Rain-x today and see what happens, but I thought this was interesting enough to post up here and see what people say. In stead of Rain-x I'm going to put down a layer of the Klasse SG and see if that changes anything.

Rain-X is worthless, honestly.

You'll get the same results from just applying a layer of car wax to your windshield. It'll last longer, too. And should reduce the water spots.

I know, I usually just apply a layer of sealant when I detail the car but I found my old bottle of Rain-x and decided to use it up. I do think it did a better job of beading than the sealant I used to use, but I haven't tried out the KSG yet. I never had a problem with water spots before the new windshield/Rain-x, so I hope this isn't a problem with the windshield.

That's odd to hear about those spots. I've been using Rain X for many years, and I've never had the problem with it leaving such tough spots to clean.

really.

i don't think its the rain x causing the water spots. Its the crap floating around in the air you breath that causes water spots. Ive been using rain x instead of wipers for years now, and wax does, nolt last as long.

Well I removed the Rain-x with alcohol and applied a layer of Klasse SG and the water spots are all gone. I can't say for sure if it was the admittedly old Rain-x or something applied to the new windshield, but either way the KSG doesn't leave water marks. It definitely doesn't last as long as Rain-x, so I may buy a new bottle of Rain-x and see what happens.
