Splash Guards

My new 2014 Maxima came with splash guards. It is a $195 option
I don't understand the purpose of them. I had the old mud flaps on my 04 Max and they served a purpose but I just don't get these new splash guards. It seems like a lot of money for something that doesn't block dirt etc.

I've found that some can hold moisture and can cause rust behind them especially if you get bad winters with alot of salt. I take it you didn't have to pay for the extra option?

I got such a huge rebate I really didn't worry about the cost of them and living in Fl, I don't have to worry about salt. I just don't see the purpose of them

I hate splash pads for the always cause rust! Better to not have them at all.
