Wondering how much a dyno run will cost?
Wondering how much a dyno run will cost?
I had a local performance shop here in richmond va say it would be 35 bucks for one run. Is that a good price? Also how can I get the most out of the run...vs what will 2 or 3 runs do that one run won't do?
Thanks - Chad

Well the first run might be a baseline so you know where your at power wise. A second or third run might be after more mods or something to see how much power you gained from them.

I've priced out a half-dozen or so shops in California with dynos (specifically Dynojet 248's), and all charge $70-80 for a baseline run-- one strapdown with between 2 and 4 pulls. If you want air/fuel monitoring on your run, it's usually $100 per strapdown.
Buying time by the hour is usually cheaper, $100-150 (I think it was $100, but that sounds too cheap now...), because in an hour you can do 2 cars without tuning, assuming 1 dyno operator. Hourly rates are usually reserved for tuning, though... as people who use dynos to tune their cars often need 3-4 hours at a time on the dyno. (I don't know how long my neighbor spent tuning his TEC-I on his Porsche, but he spent a bit of $$$...)
(you can do 3-4 cars in an hour, maybe 5, if your dyno operator has a team of helpers helping strap down cars onto the dyno)
By far the cheapest are usually club-organized "dyno days" where a club rents out a dyno shop's services for a day. SoCal-SERCA is a great example. They just had a dyno day today, $40 for members, $50 for non-members per strapdown, and discounted rates if you did multiple strapdowns.
Note that not all clubs can get such a good deal from a local dyno shop. SERCA in particular has excellent relations with several shops. The last time I planned a Maxima dyno day back in January 2000, regular price was $70, we paid $60... not a bad deal, but not a very good deal either. Tuners who also own dynos, such as Stillen, may have discounted rates once in a while, such as at Stillen Nissan Day and Stillen Open House, where it's $50 instead of $75 for a single strapdown.

Wow thanks. Thats a lot of info. I went ahead and did two runs for 50 bucks...which was actually 3. We did 2 in 3rd gear and then 1 in 4th...and the guy only charged me for 2. I stood in a puddle of coolant and oil (not mine) while he did it. It was done on a dynojet 248. Check it out at rosenautosport.com My max power was 171.2 and max torque was 179.5...yes...I have an auto. I'll have the print out on my site in a little while.
