Have never changed Transmission fluid after 285, 000km!

O.K, I purchased my 95 Maxima used 3 years ago. As far as I know, I am unsure if the tranny oil is original or has had a flush before. I have about 60, 000km on it since I have owned it, and am planning on changing my transmission fluid.

From the researched that I have done, I have been told that it is not a wise choice to do a complete flush since the transmission may begin to slip.(True or False?)

So instead of a complete flush, I was told to do a drain and fill.(correct?)
If I use this method, how many quarts should I do? My other question is after I use this method, how many km should I wate until I do another drain and fill, and when can I do a complete flush?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Automatic transmission takes about 4 to 5 1/2 Qt. for a drain and fill.

What is the reason behind doing the half flush versus full dump of the pan/cleaning magnets....I know it is used to reduce the slipping, but why does it??

If it were my car, I'd read the Sticky on how to change an auto tranny fluid....and then do a complete drain, drop the pan, clean the filter, and finally flush the return radiator line.

if it has never been changed DONT ever change it if you do the trans will start slipping, only change it if it has been changed regularly

Old atf contains very small debris and particules that increases friction between the bands of the transmission and the drums (shaft or gears) they apply pressure on. Remove these debris and particules by changing ATF will reduce friction, and might increase slippage. Frightening, isn'it? Makes me wonder after 100 000 km: should I or not flush anf fill with new ATF. If I do I will keep the old ATF for a while , to put back in, just in case there is too much slippage......

Last weekend I did a power flush ( disconnected the cooler hose return line and let the atf pour into a can while the engine running ) . I used 12 liters of new atf. The first 4 liters that came out were pretty dark. The last 4 were very close to the color of the new ATF: nice red. I was asking myself same question as you before deciding to do this job. After the flush, I felt a slight improvement in smoothness of gear shifting. The MAx had exactly 100 000 km and this was the first atf change. This is my experience.

Please read my previous post for details:

I KNOW my '92 max had never had the fluid changed, and it had 136k miles on it when I did, and it doesn't slip any more than it did before, but it shifts so much smoother and isn't as sluggish in cold weather..the car belonged to my aunt and uncle before me, and I bought it at 130k..
