Low oil level but NO light?

So on the oil dipstick it reads bearly up to the L; however, no low oil light comes on when I drive the car. Should I add more oil or is it not below some critical volume so the light isn't coming on because of that?
Thanks

The light is for oil pressure. While realy low oil will trip the light, they are not the same thing. Top it off to the recommended level.

Top it off. Like Y2K2Driver mentioned, that light is solely connected to a pressure switch. Basically, if you see it other than at startup, you have major issues.

My low oil light came on when I had about 1.5L of oil left in the motor.
