Transmission gone bad?

Just joined and like this site. I have a '98 Maxima GLE. Great car and kept (thought I did) good care of it. I'm wondering if any other '98 Maxima owners has had this happen to them?

Recently, when I would put it in reverse (automatic), it would sit there and not go in gear until I stepped on the gas a little. Once in drive, it would lunge for the first 3-5 minutes or so. After that, the car would be fine for the most part.

The mechanic O went to said it's the torque converter. My transmission fluid is ok, but I'm really concerned that the transmission is fried. Has anyone ever replaced just the torque converter or would the transmission need to be replaced? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I also have a 98 Maxima GLE, with trans problems, i got it with a warranty, so i'm gonna go ahead and get a tranny rebuild. My CEL came on twice for 1107, torque coverter...my tranny has been slipping, and been a little jerky lately, so it could possibly be the same thing you're experiencing. CHeck the tranny fluid, and rub it on your finger. If there is black mildew, or particles, that's metal in the tranny from your gears grinding, that's a sign that the tranny's gonna go. Also, check the fluid for burnt smell/dark color. Definitely have a tranny shop check it out before it's too late.
