Burning oil?

Its only been about 2 months and less than 2000 miles since my last oil change consisting of castrol gtx 10w30 and a nissan oil filter. I was really concerned because my car was making all kinds of noises and the timing chain was getting loud. I checked the level of the oil and it was really dark and very low. This is strange because I've changed the oil a couple of times already and it was never low during prior changes. I decided to change the oil again with castrol gtx and a nissan filter. Draining the old oil, I noticed that the car only had 2 qts max. I originally put in 4 1/4 with filter. I lost 2 1/4 qt of oil within 2 months and this is the first time it has done this. Coolant level is at its max and the temp gauge has never shown that the car is overheating. What could be the reason for the oil burning like this??

After changing the oil, the car ran smoother and most of the timing chain noise went away.
