Cleaning tranny pan, magnet, screen, etc.

I've never changed my own transmission oil before, so please bear with me if I'm asking a lot of newb questions...

Just want to make sure, but the pan is where the drain bolt is, correct? I've only done motor oil changes and don't really remember what the underside of my car looks like, but I'm hoping I'll have no problems finding it. Also, to get it off, is it a couple of bolts that are holding it together?

When you clean it, I'm assuming you use brake cleaner from the threads I've read so far. Doesn't it contaminate the oil or are the effects non-existant? Is there a certain type of brake cleaner I'm looking for? When you clean the magnets/pan/screen, do you guys spray it and dry it off with a towel or actually scrub the thing down or maybe just spray it and pop it back in? Do I need to buy any parts or will I be okay without them?

Last question...It looks like that there are two hoses right next to each other when looking for the tranny return line. How can I be sure which is which without making a mess first?

Once again, your help is appreciated. Thanks.

Use brake cleaner to clean the trans parts. You should be able to get everything clean with just a rag. Brake cleaner leaves no residue, so it won't contaminate anything when you put it all back together.

Just unhook both hoses and aim them into your collection vessel. Once you start the car, it will be obvious which is which

The return line is the one WITHOUT the banjo fitting. If you look on the transmission, I believe it is the upper hose that goes to the radiator.

I also didn't have enough brake cleaner to clean the magnets/tranny pan, so simply used rags to clean them off - no problems and they came nice and clean !

Oh, and don't overtorque those tranny pan bolts ! Maybe 10 ft/lbs. I overtorqued mine and snapped the bolt head off...

I just finished my trans flush but don't know if I did it right. I basically took the hose that was connected to the bottom of the radiator and pointed it into the bucket to find it blasting out of the end of the radiator and not the hose. I then took that hose, plugged it back in and took the other end of it and pointed it into the bucket. Is this right? The instructions (Jime) say that if it comes out of the bottom of the radiator that it's the wrong hose. Was I supposed to use the other hose or just use the other end of it like I did? I just want to make sure I'm understanding the instructions correctly. THanks!

The first hose you disconnected was ok. The ATF will come out of the bottom radiator reservoir. Put one end of a clear flexible piece of tubing on that nipple, 3-4 feet long, and the other end in your can to receive the expelled ATF.

This method will also flush the ATF remaning in the reservoir at the bottom of the radiator.

Thanks for the help, twiggy. I did use that site, but that picture looks like the same end of the hose I removed except that the oil blasted out from the bottom of the radiator and all over my car instead of out of that hose. Anyways, after the mess, I was able to re-attatch the hose and remove the other end of it to get the oil into a bucket. I was just peeved at the mess I made and for picking the wrong hose (or at least picking the wrong end of the hose).

At least I know now...and knowing's half the battle! Go Joe!
