Synthetic Oil

Today I was talking to my friend about cars and I told him that I use synthetic oil. It already has 120K and I know that synthetic is good for high milage car.
He said that I'm a moron and that Nissans are not made for synthetic oil. Personally its the first time that I ever heard it. So is it me being stupid or is it my friend being a retard?

Some people dont need synthetic. If you drive mostly highway, conventional will do. If you do racing and mostly stop and go driving, synthetic is better.

If you just want to baby the car, you can use synthetic.

If you putting a lot of stress on the car, use synthetic.

Are you a moron, no. But figure out if you really need to spend that extra $2-3 a bottle. Also slap you friend and tell him to mind his own business.

LOL, I use it because I put many miles on my car since my job is mostly driving. If I weren't using synthetic, I would be changing my oil almost as fast as getting gas.
My friend said, he called Nissan and they said not to use it. But then again, I never bring my car to Nissan because they rape you and sometimes know less about the car then I do.

not to rag on your friend.. but hes a retard.. motors arent built based on the type of oil that needs to be used, yet they do recommend a specific weight to use though.. but nothing about whether or not you should use synthetic or regular.. honestly thats about the dumbest thing ive heard.. synthetic is not going to hurt your car in any way.. it actually will prolong the life of your motor.. lubricates better.. keeps your whole engine cleaner throughout.. and also protects better against heat.. you cant go wrong using synthetic.. no matter what your friend says.. dont listen to him..

I dont know if synthetic lubricates better. do you have a source for that?

I do know that it handles heat better and remains viscous to specification for a longer period of time than regular.

For example if you change your oil every 5000 miles with regular oil, you might get 7500-8000 with synthetic.

If you use synthetic oil and still change it every 3000 miles, theoretically you are wasting money...

I use regular oil and my engines go over 100,000 miles.

In fact I have a 97 Olds LSS with a 3800 Supercharged that is about to reach 160k. Regular oil from the beginning.

Using synthetic oil won't save your engine. It'll buy you time. Engines die from cold starts, high revs, and lack of maintenance. Synthetic oils will not be any better than regular when encountering these situations. That's my opinion though.

Your friend is the moron. Tell him that they don't make cars for oil, they make oil for cars.

Your friend is a blazing buffoon.

Some of those things, like cold starts, have been proven to be less wear on an engine when it's got synthetic in it. Synthetic not only allows greater change intervals, but offers superior lubrication. Granted, the benefits of it are not such that a car that dies at 100k will make 300k. In fact if you change dino juice regularly (say every 5k) your engine will probably last in the same ball park as synthetic. Synthetic is not a miracle cure, but is a superior lubricant, and in terms of its resistance to wear it smokes dino, which is why the change intervals can be extended so significantly.

Your friend is a f&*kin idiot. I'd love to tell him that myself. Tell him about bobistheoilguy.com and tell him to post those thoughts on that forum.

Ask him if he's read the little circle on the back of every oil bottle out there. If the oil conforms to API standards then it will work in any modern engine. Especially a Nissan engine that is built with close tolerances.

Synthetics aren't magic, but in the long run, and in more extreme situations, they do hold up better. And, all things being equal, syns WILL protect your engine better on cold starts, and during high rev situations. On true cold starts, the syns superior cold flow characteristics allow faster, more effective lubrication in the first few seconds after start. In high rev situations, the syns are more shear resistant, when compared to the same grade in a dino, especially with wider spread multi-grades. I'm not sure how you define "lack of maintenance," but syns will clearly go much further between changes than dinos will. Go check out the "Used Oil Analysis" section of Bobistheoilguy.com. I've had excellent results, lab proven at 7500 miles of combined urban and highway driving. Once I'm out of wty, I'll be doing 10k changes easily. You could not do that safely with a Group I or II dino oil.
