Anyone use 0W40 Mobil 1 synthetic oil?

Anyone use Mobil 1 synthetic 0W40 oil? Or any brand of 0W40 oil for that matter? What are the pro's and con's of using 0W40?

I am just in the process of switching over to synthetic following an AutoRX clean and rinse which takes 3,500 miles. I bought 12 litres of Esso XD-3 Extra, 0w30, PAO, full synthetic recently. I would be inclined to stay with a 0W30 rather than a 0W40 in your climate.

The new Esso oil is gaining rave reviews on bobistheoilguy.com. The 0W30 is not available in the US. You would have to go to Canada and get it from an Esso bulk plant. I believe the 0W40 is available in Wal Mart in the US. A lot of long-time Mobil 1 users on BITOG are switching to the Esso product. It is made by Imperial Oil, a subsidiary of Exxon and is considerably cheaper than Mobil 1.

It is intended for diesel applications and one benefit is longer OCIs and how it performs on cold start-ups.

I wouldn't bother with that weight oil. Just stick with 10w30 or 5w30.

Have you ever watched a Green Bay Packers football game on TV? I wouldn't recommend a 10W30 for Wisconsin winters. Stick with a 5W30 or 0W30, but not 10W30

Why not 10w30? It's still doable. Why should he go with 0w40 is the question?

Edit - I wasn't being clear when I stated that members of BITOG are switching to Esso XD-3. They are coming to Canada and buying the 0W30 synthetic and are using it rather than Mobil 1 5W30.

I'm not suggesting 0W40. Although 10W30 is doable, I would be inclined to use 5W30 in Wisconsin winters. I strongly suspect that he will experience better cold start-ups and improved fuel economy using a 5w30, rather than a 10W30 and may be a perfect candidate for the Esso XD-3, 0W30, I am switching to. I am not choosing that oil for cold weather purposes and the winters where I live are quite mild, certainly milder than Franklin, MA.

5w30 dino is fine. 10w40 synthetic would also be just fine.

40 is heavier and people think it's going to protect better. That worst thing about using heavy oil is that the oil pump won't like it. I learned my lesson long ago when I had my Toyota truck.

There is no upside to using M1 0w-40. It is designed for Euro Imports and shears badly since the spread is so high. It should be called 0w-30 since it shears down to a 30 during an interval. If you are inclined to go with a 40 weight, I would choose the Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w-40 (rebadged Delvac 1) since it is more shear stable.

That being said, I believe the Castrol Syntec 0w-30 made in Germany (GC) is a better choice if you can find it. I have only seen it at Autozone. It would fit the bill with the 0w rating and is a thicker 30 weight versus Mobil 1.
