Delo in a VQ?

here's a UOA for a VQ35 on 15W40 Delo. Looks real good - some BITOGers say Nissan VQs need a thicker oil, but I'd worry about the 15W for cold winter starts.

So.... tht makes me wonder if 0W40 is a better oil for VQ motors - anyone have a UOA to share?

Read the stickies. There you will find discussions about wide weight-range motor oils (0W40 fits that description) experiencing higher rates of shear that quickly reduce that wide range. I'm not an expert on this, so read what other say in the stickies.

I too am coming to the conclusion that my VQ needs a slightly heavier motor oil than 5W30. (That weight was chosen by Nissan for the minor but measurable improvement it gives in fuel mileage.) I expect I will no longer buy that weight and go to 10W30 as a better choice. But I will use the 5W30 Mobil 1 I have on hand in my VQ.

Ive considered going with M1 5w-40 Truck and SUV for some time now, great oil, bitogers love it.

the German Castrol syntec 0W30 is a slightly thicker 30wt oil, and is supposed to be all grp IV PAOs and grp V esters - it has a lot of loyal followers, but it has no moly, so I'm not sold on it yet.

sky jumper,

GC is one of the best choices for our car. It is a thick 30 weight at 12.2 centistokes at 100 deg C versus M1 at 10.2. (9.8 to 12.5 cST range for 30 weight) I hope to have an analysis in the next couple of months. The problem with Amsoil is that the formulations are not A3 Euro rated since they are thinner oils geared toward fuel economy. Amsoil is looking more like Mobil 1 EP by the day.

As for Delo 15w-40, I believe that is a little too thick. if you could get any of the diesel rated in the 10w-30 flavor, that would be the best way to go.

johnny - any thoughts on the new gold GC? do you think it's as good as the green stuff?

VSOT?? valvoline oil treatment? hmm - mixing chemistries with an advanced add pack like GC - I wonder if that's smart. i think I read something about competing esters causing problems or some blah.

sky jumper,

I am not sure if the new Gold GC is as good as the Green Elixir. I am not crazy about the new GF4 oils with less zinc (ZDDP) and Boron. From what I have read from a retired chemist, the only real difference is the amount of additives. The special ester is still in place with the primary PAO baseoil.

As for mixing VSOT or Schaeffer's 132 Moly EP, I would only do that with a thin oil with a weak additive package like Mobil 1. It does have a good basestock though.

Lube Control is my choice for a "additive" in the extended drain model.
