changed my 6-speed gear oil today...

i changed my gear oil today, it wasn't tough. I went to 3 different stores looking for a 10mm hex bit for a rachet for the drain and fill plug and didn't have any luck. I ended up buying a traditional 10mm hex bit(in a set) with a long arm. It takes a lot of force to get them loose but once loose you can unscrew them by hand.

Anyone who is going to do this can learn from my mistake, when i unscrewed the drain plug the oil shot out about a foot(comes out thick and fast) and got on the driveway before i slid the pan over. Also, you definately want rubber gloves for this because apparently the stock gear oil is what my dad called a hypoid oil which is really bad to touch and smell, and it just plain smells yucky so be careful.

Access to everything is pretty easy and i didn't lift the car. I had a funnel with a tube on it which i held above the engine bay with the tube in the fill hole, it took about 2.5 quarts.

I replaced the gaskets which i ordered from nissan but after doing it do not think it is necessary but they are like 10 bucks for 2 so why not.

I put in Redline MT-90(not smelly ) and took it for a short spin, 90% sure i felt a difference, I ordered it from summitracing.com.

Its gonna be cold tonight so maybe ill update

My experience was essentially the same. The bad smell of the original fluid was in my garage for almost 24 hrs.

Check out my experience on this thread (and note the link in the first post to even more info).

Redline rocks! I have the same experience as well....definitely noticed the difference in shifting...

for anybody who owns a 6spd maxima...these are the 3 mods you should do to get the most driving pleasure out of it..

1. White Lithium Grease mod
2. Redline Mt-90
3. Homemade Short throw shifter

goto autozone and buy a can of white lithium grase ($3)...then take apart your shifter console and start spraying the **** out of the pivot ball at the bottom...also spray the bushings and anything that moves down there....go for a test drive and enjoy much smoother shifts...as the days pass, add more coats of grease as it will wear out...

one of the best cheap mods i've done....including GAB, Advanced timing etc...

i'm not sure it if it will benefit the 4th gen...but you could try...I believe the 4th gen has a pivot ball iirc....you can't go wrong with $3 even if it doesn't work
