What interval do you guys get oil change?

1. At the recommended 3750 mark?
2. Every 3000 miles?
3. Every 5000 miles?

On my previous cars i went every 5000. But w/ my Max ive been going by the manual of every 3750 miles.

Thinking about going back to the every 5000 miles oil change.
What do you guys think?

Depends on what oil you use, but I would do it around 3500-3750. My first change will be at 3000 though.

I used to change my '97 SE every 3500 miles, but now with my '02 GLE I've increased that a little bit up to 4,000 miles. I'm slowly working my way up to 4500.

When I was runing Dino motor oil (Castrol GTX), I change the oil every 3,750 miles. When I switched to Mobil 1 motor oil, I went to the maximum interval recommended (accepted) by Nissan = 7,500 miles.

I believe that synthetic motor oil is good for over 10K miles, but want to keep my power-train warranty in effect for the full time and mileage. When they expire, I will consider going to a longer change interval.

5000 miles (sometimes 6000 too) on Chevron 10W30 and OEM filter. I do every 30K miles an UOA to determine how long I can take an oil too!!!

How long you run your oil is a function of what kind of driving you do and how quickly you rack up the miles.

I have never gone as far as 5K on dino oil before, primarily because it would take me a year to put that many miles on. I think the 90-day OCI is propaganda perpetrated by the oil companies and lube joints.

If you run a decent dino oil and drive mostly highway miles, I suspect there is no reason you couldn't get 5K out of the OCI provided it was within say 6 months.

I have now switched to Esso XD3, 0w30, PAO, full synthetic and am planning on one year OCIs.

I spoke to my uncle who is a mechanic and car enthusiast like us. He said you can easily drive 10K miles on syn***ic oil like the MObil 1. The only catch, if you do 2k a year you have to change it because the oil will start disintegrating with time once you put it to use. I drive my max fairly hard so I change every 6 but last time I change and put my fingers in the collection cup and the oil is clean.

Thats fine, but you don't get a quality syn***ic but the low end conventional oil. Not that the oil is bad, you just can't compare it to syn***ic.

In Brooklyn you can get oil change for $10 when you bring your own oil and filter. You can get 24 bottles of conventional oil at costco for like 27 bucks. Filter will cost ya about 2 bucks for the cheap sheet the dealer will install.

No offense but why do you guys think that $200 for lifetime oil changes is a steal. In addition every time you go there they nag you for other services.

Man, switch to sinthetic and just write of your loss, your engine and you will be in better shape. Just my $.02

I change every 6 months on Mobil 1 5W-30,because I do 2-4 mile city driving a few times a day, so at 6 months I only put on like 2,000 miles.

You might as well not even have a filter if you use FRAM. Check out the Stickies for the details.

Very funny.

You are putting on an orange can that does little or no filtering. It is junk and you pay a cheap price for this junk.

Don't argue with me, check out the stickies on filters.

The Fram filter works. It does its job.

I heard somewhere on here that Nissan reccomends the use of dino oil in the VQ, anyone hear this?

It is my understanding that Nissan recommends you not switch from Dino oil to Synthetic motor oil until you have at least 20 K miles on the car. This allows the VQ engine to properly break-in. It is funny that some cars (Corvette) come from the factory with synthetic.

I switched to Mobil 1 at 7,500 miles -- before I knew about the above Nissan recommendation. If I could do it over again, I would probably have waited until 11,250 or even 15,000 miles. When I switched, I also increased my oil change interval from 3,750 miles (dino) to 7,500 miles (synthetic).

Why would I wait? Because my VQ engine after switching continued to "burn" a little motor oil (about half a quart between changes) until I had about 40 K miles on the car. Now the oil burning has decreased to about 1/4 of a quart between oil changes (every 7,500 miles). I believe that had I continued with Dino oil until 15 K miles, this slight oil burning would have decreased much quicker than it did by using Synthetic.

Thats good to know, I thought I heard that. I still like to change the oil every 3500mi with Dino, I'd rather get the old oil (and metal particles) out more frequently than use synthetic and leave it in twice as long...just my .02

You are NOT looking at it right!

Particles come from friction, shaving of metal. Less friction = less particles.

SYNTHETIC OIL PROVIDES LESS FRICTON by keeping the engine clean.

Once you are fully past the break-in period of the engine (which it appears Nissan believes lasts for up to 20 K miles), you should have very few metal particles in the oil. Also, the above post points out that less friction from synthetic oil will result in less wear and thus fewer metal particles. And the filter should take out all but the very smallest of any that may be there.

The importance of a good filter is why many who run synthetic oil for 10K miles between changes will change their filter (but not the oil) at 5 K miles. If I were pushing my Mobil 1 to 10 K miles or more, I probably would do the same.
