M-105 = No VTC Grind?????

THis may be somewhat premature, but I've noticed that since I switched to a larger capacity Mobil1 M-105 Oil filter, I have not once heard or experienced the VTC grind @ Cold-Startup in over 300 miles! Typically, I get the "grind" more in COlder weather, but by no means has it EVER been consistent, Hot OR Cold!
I also switched to 10w30 Mobil1 for the first time ever, but I doubt that would have any significance anyway.

Interesting, but by no means scientific.
The unfortunate part is that I'm going to try running my engine about a QUART lower than usual (dipstick at L vs. H) in order to experiment with my mysterious oil-loss issue (1qt every 5k miles). This, in effect, should serve to reduce the "extra Capacity" theory from using the M1-105 filter.

Perhaps the -105 has a better back-pressure valve than the -110 that I've been using thus far? ~WHO KNOWS?!!

Just thought I'd share this observation. ANybody else have this happen??

is this the first time youve used synthetic or just 10-30 synthetic? if you switched from dino to syn i say thats the reason, but it could be either, sounds like a very good combo to me

Heh-heh....nice try!
Nope -been on the full-synth for over 35k now.
Actually, I made a mistake: I Just switched to 5w-30, not 10w-30 -- because I moved back north; i.e. colder ambient in the winter.

I'll have to post back-up when I drain the "extra" quart of oil out of my block, and see how it behaves then. I'm fearful, and yet intrigued that there could be a direct correlation.

so what were you using before???

changing oils can definitely effect cold start noises -- even if you stay within the same grade! I should know -- I battled cold start knock for 6 months before I found an oil that gave me quiet starts. filters can also make a difference -- since you changed both you may never know what it was. be happy you found a good combination!

No - been running M1 for a while now, just switched grades for the cold weather....and it hasn't even been COLD yet!

I think it'll be quite easy to determine if it was the filter or the oil grade - but then again, once I lower my oil level - that will factor as well.
I feel like the mad scientist!

I've been running Mobil 1 5-30 and the 105 filter for 50K. I started using these at 9000 miles on my 2K2. I still have that timing chain noise from time to time.

Maybe you'll have different results. Keep us posted. But really, that timing chain noise (I'm assuming that's what you're talking about) isn't anything to be worried about. It can be fixed but nothing bad will happen if you don't. For me it happens about once every 4-5 weeks and I drive my Max daily.

The reason it rattles upon cold startup is because it's not yet lubricated until the engine builds up the oil pressure. I really hate to say it, but I doubt changing an oil filter would change this at all

I am not sure where ADBVs come into play here, but the VQ is the first motor in a car I have owned to have a sideways mounted filter. It is also the first car I have had to have odd noises at startup (the G does it too, 03 sedan).

I can see that a higher quality ADBV (mobil uses a sythetic media and a real silicon or something ADBV- it is good, whatever it is ) could affect startup pressure.

I switched to german castrol, and found a huge dimishment in startup rattle. I am going to swith to a mobil fiter and GC oil next time and see if I can really stop it.
