+1 Dextron III, all though you may not find it under that name anymore. GM decided they didnt want people useing the Dextron name on other manufactured products so nearly all makers of the Dex III have changed the name on their bottles to Automatic Transmision Fluid. On the back it will say its 100% compatible with Dextron III, which it should be since its the same stuff in the bottle, just renamed.

Does anyone know if WalMart's dexron 3 brand is good? Would it be okay if I put in Dextron 5 or 6 into my maxima?

Each new Dexron is compatible with and approved for all previous versions. The newest Dexron or the Dexron/Mercon SHOULD work. Of course Dexron is formulated for GM transmissions, so the newer stuff might not be compatible with older Nissan trannys.

I stand corrected...it is backward compatible. D-VI is designed for newer cars but my understanding is that it's a lighter viscosity fluid than D-III is. "Should" it work??? I guess so, but I think I'd look for a fluid that is of the specified viscosity. And there are some D-III rated fluids still available.

My 93 Maxima PS was leaking and low, so I added so DexIII/Merc. It start making a loud scraping noise like a fan blade hitting the housing. Is my PS pump toast?

Sorry for the original post being in the wrong location.
Synthetic ATF is thicker than DexIII which is thicker than DexII. I've used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF for 3 years without any problems in the 93 Maxima GXE. I really don't know if it will last longer for most major brands of dino products are very good. Two different vendors actually said that other than cold or heat extremes that the high quality dino was better in lubrication and oxidation protection. One sold both products.

It was a vapor lock. Loosen the end opposite end of the high pressure line and started the engine for a second. Should be less for fluid was all over. Then filled the reservoir, turned right and left a couple of times, refilled the reservoir and repeated the process twice. Quite now. Manual says DexII which is thicker than DexIII. I can't get DexII (obsolete). Dex/Merc or ATF3. Check with the auto parts store.

Does anybody know why PS fluid (yellow) is $6 per quart while the Dex/Merc (red) is $3 per quart? Is the additive package better with the PS for longer life or to stop leaks>
