Question regarding engine flush

So I went to Nissan for an oil change today. Since the engine is new with only 2k miles on it I have been getting oil changes more frequently. They also did an engine flush (I did not pay for it - they just did it) b/c Im guessing they saw some shavings due to the engine being new. Can someone explain what exactly an engine flush consists of and are special fluids used? Does a flush get rid of 100% of the oil in the engine?

I was reading up on the forums and a few said that flushing an engine could be more bad than good. Any truth to that?

There's different flushing techniques varying from the introducton of a simple additive to a more sophisticated system where a flush machine is hooked up to your oil filter mount and a heated solution is forced through your engine...when using one of these machines, they typically evacuate the fluid from the normal drain. Since you had it done at the dealer, my guess is that they have invested in a flush machine, and will make money on it by selling the service to customers.

Using one of the machines does get rid of all your old oil, but it probably leaves behind a small amount of solvent. Flushing may have some value, but if you change the oil regularly and/or use a good quality synthetic there should be no need for flushing. I understand your situation is not like this, but I would be cautious about doing it with an engine that is severely varnished or sludged...I would be concerned that the solvent would loosen the sludge and clog your oil filter or other passages in short order, before your next oil change. Flushing a dirty engine will definitely not eliminate all the crud that has built up in it.

I would recommend that for the future you forego the flushes, and change the oil religiously or use a good quality synthetic

actually one of my buddies is a tech there and did it as a favor

talkinghorse thanks for the input..he mentioned something about putting oil in a few times and draining it out a few times in a row to get rid of any shavings

edit: so basically it was just drained and refilled a few times with only oil...oil looks like water now lol

I don't like the idea of motor flush. It waters down the oil and you can not possible get it all back out with out changing the oil a few times.
