filter magnets
What's the point?
You'd be better off with a magnetic drain plug, If you want to pick up stray metal particles. The drain plug is where crap settles, the oil filter is where oil flows past constantly. Anything a magnet picks up would likely re-enter the flow eventually.

I am going to be changing my MT fluid soon (2001 5spd).
Do I need to check these magnets?
Where exactly are they located?
I have looked in my FSM and can't find anything about them, or cleaning them either. I have also searched the .org and most of the threads that come up just mention them, not specifically where they are located, or how to check them.
Thanks.

The reason you can't find them is because they're not there! These are aftermarket parts used to catch metallic particles.
That would make sense why I couldnt find it in the FSM.
I guess I assumed it was something that was standard, since up until today, when I read people talking about magnetic filterplugs, nobody ever mentioned them being an aftermarket part (or I just overlooked it).
I have both the filter magnet and the magenetic drain plug in the Corvette. I have never been able to detect any particles on the magnetic drain plug magnet, even when the car was new. I think it is more a psychological thing.
I will not be doing either on the Nissan.
