how many miles to go on synthetic?

I use royal purple..and have heard from a few people about how many miles they drive on oil. lets just say id rather be on the safe side with oil..and not go too many miles. so royal purple + mobil 1 extended life filter. I add a little oil here and there ( approx 1/4 - 1/2 quart every 1K) so what do u guys think?

Funny, you mention this. I was at the gym this morning on the tread mill and I was wondering how far I can go on my Royal Purple too. Its expensive and I have three cars that use it, so . . . anyone know?

Check out bob is the oil guy. I think the Royal Purple can safely go 15 k before a change is needed. Synthetic oil will shear down and if you have some fuel dilution than can reak havic. The Amsoil folks will do 25k or one year on their oil and filter.

I just changed over to Mobil 1 5W30. I have always used the Mobil 105 filter and are planning on changing the filter at 2500 and going 5k. Will update here since I drive from NY to NV in a month and that will be the time I change it.

I am using Mobil 1 which happens to be the same oil used in my wifes Mercedes. The dealer changes her oil every 12,000 miles. I wouldnt dare go that long but I will safely say It will not affect my car to go 6,000..

Go check out the Mobil 1 thread over in the Fluids and Lubricants section. There is some good information over there. I spent some time reading through the history and checking out the links in that thread. IMO, I think most people could go 7500 miles on synthetic without a problem. Several people in there go longer than that. As someone else mentioned, the Europeans have been moving to synthetics and are going to 12k miles or 1 year oil change interval. It seems the US is behind the times in this area and we still have a lot of "old way of thinking", which I am often guilty of myself.

I think the best way to answer it is to have your oil analyzed. Last time i had mine done by Blackstone they were okay with me stretching it out to 10k on M1 Synth, with filter changes every 5k. I've actually gone the entire 15k stretch on the M1 EP with no negative side effects.

A buddy of mine is a salesman at a Infiniti dealership. They recommend 7.5K oil change intervals using mobil 1 synthetic on the Vq35. What works for Infiniti works for me.

I change filter at 5K and oil and filter at 10K. Over 210K so far and I don't burn a drop.

This is the correct answer -- along with the statement: "It Depends" on the type of driving you do and the conditions you drive in.

I use Mobil 1 and so long as my powertrain warranty was in effect, I changed my motor oil at 7,500 mile OCIs (the maximum OCI mentioned in the owners manual). Once the warranty expired at 60 K miles, I went to 10 K mile OCIs. The first (and so far the only) time I did that, I sent in a sample to Blackstone and they advised me that the used oil still had "life" remaining. But I will not try and push the next change beyond 10 K miles.

Quoting from the lab report {with my comments in these brackets}: "Universal averages for the 3.5L engine are based on an oil run of 4,400 miles. You ran this oil a whopping 9,720 miles, and most wear {indicators} still read close to averages. You could easily run the next sample 10,000+ miles, if you wanted. The oil was in good shape physically, containing no moisture, fuel or coolant. The TBN read 4.6, still showing plenty of active additive left. 1.0 is considered low. The oil filter {one Mobil 1 filter for total mileage} is doing a good job for you (see insolubles)."

My driving pattern -- that IMHO safely allows me to use this 10 K mile OCI:

- Car normally garaged where the temperature never gets below about 35 deg F.

- Rarely drive in rush-hour traffic (and the traffic here in Colorado is nothing like the traffic I had when we lived in the Chicago area).

- Take frequent long highway trips as follows: Once a year to SC and back. Two to 4 trips a year to Chicago and back. Two to 4 trips a year to Denver and back.

- Whenever we go to town, the engine gets fully warmed-up when we return home, climbing about 1,200 feet in elevation in about 3 miles of driving.

If you make frequent short trips and also do mostly stop-and go driving, you should use a shorter OCI, even with synthetic. But getting a lab test of the used oil will give you the best answers.

I go 7500 miles and change out the filter at the midway point.

I am quoting the report I got back from Blackstone Labs on my oil sample that went just short of 10 K miles.

"The oil filter is doing a good job for you (see insolubles)."

This oil filter was a single Mobil 1 filter and it was not changed until I changed the oil. I believe if you use a good filter (bigger than the Nissan OEM filter) you can safely go the full OCI distance on a single filter -- unless you drive in very dusty conditions.

I think thats alot of oil consumption IMO. Do you have a leak or is the 3.5 drinking the oil?

Just to update I pulled the filter yesterday after 2500 miles of changing to Mobil 1 5W30 Synthetic and the oil is very clean. I was surprised. I put a new Mobil 105 filter and will prob go 6k before I change.

Try switching to Mobil1. I was using Royal Purple in my 626 and going through about a quart every 3000 miles, switched to Mobil1 (when the local lube goons stopped carrying Royal Purple), and it was about 1/3 to 1/2 quart every 3000 miles.

I've been running Mobil1 with Purolator PureOne filter on my max (both the 3.0 and the 3.5 engines). I change the oil every 6000 miles, but changing the oil filter at about 3000mi.

6k for the sake of the filter...I would go until 8k otherwise.

What a waste of resources -- and money. Have your used oil tested by a lab to see how much life remains in what you are discarding. You should at least get to 5 K miles. Mobil 1 is good for much longer than you are using it.

ROCKART: You are such a burden on mother earth with the load crap of ignorance on oils and OCIs.

Any dino will take you to 5K OCI, how I know, I have done UOAs regularly on the oil. Syn could easily take you to 10K, do an UOA at 7.5K and 10K to be sure.
