FLushed PS Fluid

After reading the stickie...I tried doing the turkey baster method to suck-out the old fluid in my PS reservoir.
After about three cycles of sucking & refilling (spare me the jokes ) I decided this wasn't going to cut it for me.

So, I disconnected the return hose (front side of reservoir) and sealed the nipple on the res. with DUCT TAPE. Next I took the disconnected return line and stuck it in one of the empty clear AMSOIL litre bottles and made sure it was stationary. Using a clear bottle helped me to assess how much NEW fluid was in the lines. I emptied the catch bottle after each purge to inspect the color.

I topped the reservoir, and closed the lid. The car was already jacked-up with the wheels off the ground; I started the engine and ran it for ONLY 1-3 SECONDS. This was MORE than enough time to clear the FULL reservoir, and spit the old fluid into the catch bottle.

I repeated this cycle 3 times. It took approx. one quart of fluid to clear the old fluid, and run "clear". Since I had already begun the flushing cycle with the baster method, I'd say 2 qts. of ATF should do it, start to finish. The system can't hold more than 1 to 1.5 qts, max. (since nobody knows for sure).
I bought AMSOIL ATF DexIII from Talkinghorse. Again, good stuff!

My advice, is don't be afraid to disconnect ONE HOSE from the PS res. to flush the system. It's easy, and it's more effiecient at removing ALL of the old fluid. Even if you DO get air in the line, it's a pressurized loop, and all you have to do to clear the old fluid and any air in the lines is lift the front wheels off the ground and cycle the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times.

I'm just at 5yrs. and 60k on ALL of my fluids, and I'm very happy I've changed them all now. Just in time for winter....and my new engine.

i simply emptied out the resevoir by disconnecting the hoses completely off, both of them like this, refilled, drove around for a week and did it again, and again after the second week with regular dexron 3 atf as the fsm suggests, same thing , the resevour hoses are low pressure so it is safe to disconnect them

I still have a quart of Amsoil ATF left, and I may just do another flushing or two....it's SO easy - and the piece of mind makes me giggle like a little school girl!!
