I used wrong coolant

Hey guys, I have a 04 Max, and changed oil cooler o-ring, I drained coolant from cooler lines an radiator. Coolant was green. Not thinking anything of it I used some coolant I had laying around. It was orange, brand Texaco. I read label and it said it was safe to use. I didn't know there were such big differences in coolant. What is the best thing to do now? Thanks!!!

You don't have to create two threads via copy and paste...

well, you *could* flush out the orange stuff, then flush with water (distilled iirc) a couple times, then re-fill with the green.

or you could leave the orange in there if it's really ok for it...

read these threads, you're fine keeping it orange.

if the label said "safe to use with all colours of coolant", its no problem. if thats not labeled on it, i would drain it and replace it with green. leaving the orange might cause some cooling system damage in the long run, but right now theres no harm. just drain it and fill it with green. dont have to flush it or anything

colours usually go by manufacturer, Nissan usually uses green, GM uses orange, Toyota uses red, some use blue etc

I've heard bad things about the orange coolant such as it gelling up and clogging up lines. never seen it personally but just saying.

They quit using the orange coolant in the early 2000s because it would eat away at gaskets, and in some cases, radiators. Had a couple GM vehicles that have needed new intake gaskets from that crap, along with every Caddy I've ever worked on, but it wasnt just a problem exclusive to GM. It may be fine for a Nissan, but I'd personally never use it.

if it says dexcool, flush that crap out and either go w/ green or universal. dexcool is some bad stuff. some dexcool is red, some is orange. never mix dexcool w/ green. it will make your engine puke up all of it's gaskets. i've seen it happen before.

can't agree more with you.... a complete system flush and refill will not hurt anything... nothing better than some fresh coolant in the system...
