need help with trans...

So I bought an 04 from a friend and it makes a rattling sound when I let off on the gas and when I put it in gear it makes a cracking sound I'm assuming it's the differential!!!.. I've checked the axles and they are fine and the trans shifts smooth when driving any ideas?
