New Brembo Pads & Rotors for My 96 Maxima?
New Brembo Pads & Rotors for My 96 Maxima?
I need new pads and rotors for my 1996 Maxima GL with 292,000 miles that I have owned since new and use as our backup car. I probably should sell it, instead of sinking more money into it. In the last five years, I have installed new tires, radiator, heater hoses in 11/23 (290K). four struts, sway bar links/bushings, drive belts in 10/20 (283K), passenger-side window regulator/motor and alternator in 10/20 and front and rear valve cover gaskets replaced in 4/19 (279 K). Unfortunately, it leaks oil badly from upper oil pan, front and rear main, as well as power steering fluid. I have been told by several different mechanics that I need new lower control arms, CV axles on both sides, probably new power steering rack & pinion, and pump/hoses. The original Bose speakers are no longer working with the aftermarket Pioneer radio, the seat covers need to be replaced and front passenger door no longer locks. I still really enjoy driving the old reliable Maxima, but as I am listing all of the needed repairs, it probably makes no sense to keep trying to hold on to it. And my wife totally agrees!! However, in the meantime until I sell it, I still may decide to purchase pads and rotors from Rock Auto which has several different companies offering manufacturer closeout at good prices and then have someone install them for me. I wish I could do the work myself, but I have bad back issues that prevent that. I would appreciate feedback if Brembo pads and rotors would be a good choice for my Maxima?
First off, I’d encourage you to find and install simple OEM replacement brand rotors and pads. I have not done any cost comparisons but I’d suspect that parts from, say … Wagner or Raybestos … or someplace like that would serve you just as well.
I’m running Wagner rotors and Raybestos pads for about the past 7, maybe 8 years with zero complaints or issues.
Secondly, I’d also encourage you to look closely at the cost of repairing your Maxima as opposed to selling and purchasing something new/newer.
I keep fairly extensive records on my ‘99. Since it’s been fully paid-for back in ‘02 and including the costs of repairs, replacements and the costs of upgrades I’ve just done for fun, my car’s monthly payment equivalent comes to about $37/month.
Not to mention the personal satisfaction I get from driving a quite pristine example of a 26 year old, true, manufactured over-seas Nissan that I also purchased off of the dealer show-room floor.
