Help me decide, should I get a 3rd or 4th gen Max. Give me the pro's and the con's.

3rd gens look better, but it's much easier to get a excellent condition 4th gen because they're newer. All 3rd gen GXE's make 160 HP and 92-94 SE's make 190 HP, while all 4th gens make 190. Also, the 160 HP engines have timing belts and the other ones have chains.

The sohc engines are more reliable, and will probavly last linger. The dohc id definetly faster.

I've owned both, an '89 GXE, and my current '97 SE. I love/loved both of these cars. If I were given the choice today, I'd have to go with the 4th gen. You gotta love the VQ engine. Drive 'em both, you make the call.

In my opinion, I think the 4th gens handle better overall than the 3rd gen. The rear end follows the front better in quick left-right transitions whereas the 3rd gens are a little tail happy in the same maneuver. But the 3rd's do look better and have more comfortable front seats.

Re: 3rd gen better looking?..

I agree completely. This is a matter of taste and your personal preference. If you like the boxy style the go with the 3rd if not the 4th is the only choice. Sorry I think the 4th looks better, also the VQ is awesome!!!!!!

the reason i liek the 3gn styl better si that the 4gs are bublelish. not neraly as bad as some fords not to be mentioned. I think a body kit is nessary on a 4gn to make it look good. the engin is also stroger on the 4gn.

Better off getting a newer car for hoses, belts, seals and over all wear and tear. Plus if you really want VALUE-you can buy a GXE 5 speed for 7-12,000. If you buy a 3rd gen you have to buy the SE for the 190 hp engine. Plus, the 3rd gen cars (although they look great) are starting to look dated. More likely to get a piece of @ss in a 4th gen.

Give me a 3rd gen with the VQ and a 4th gen dashboard and I'd be a really happy man. I think that sums up how I feel about both generations.
