Oil Filter Question

I have spent an hour searching but to no avail. A few weeks ago I read a thread that had a lot of info cross referencing the various filters that would fit our cars. Amsoil, Mobil 1, Wix, Bosch etc. Also contained info about drain back valves etc. I thought I read that the Mobil 1 M1-205 was a fit but during my searching some said they tryed it and it was wrong thread. Need that thread or info...

Anything cross referenced on there for a SDF-13 or SDF-36 will work on the VQs. It was originally thought the SDF-34 would as well (that's where the M1-205 reference came about), but that turned out not to be the case.

Recommendation: get filters cross referenced with the SDF-36, as they are bigger and have more area for filtering.

The STP 2849 or 6941 (Fram uses the same numbers, except they have a PH in front of the number) should be available at Auto Zone. I did not write down which one had the top bypass valve and which one did not. Both of those cross reference with the SDF-36. Whichever filter it was was $6.99, certainly not cheap. I didn't have time to flip through the parts book to see which Mobil 1 filter cross referenced with that STP filter, but the STP/Bosch/Mobil 1 filters are made on the same line, with the Mobil 1 only differing in the paper media used for filtering (synthetic with the Mobil 1 filters).

Nope. Pretty much anything is better than Fram. Wix just isn't in the league of STP/Bosch/Mobil 1/Amsoil right now.

I was actcually looking for that same post from Bill yesterday! I went to AutoZone to get oil (for the Altima) and filters (for both cars), and noticed that the Altima (KA24DE engine) uses the M1-205 filter. Its huge compared to the M1-110. Needless to say I didn't try it on the Maxima. I got the correct Mobil filter.

If I get time at the parts store again, I'll find the proper Mobil 1 oversized reference for the STP one I found with the top bypass valve design. Amsoil just doesn't make one, so they are probably going down in my recommended list once I find the Mobil/STP/Bosch cross references.

Yeah, the 205 will only work with VG and VE Maximas.....the VQ is ever-so-slightly different.

ejj,

Don't you owe me an oil analysis?

Yeah, but I lost the blackstone sample continer when I moved. A new one is on its way to me. 7k miles from now I'll get it done. That's like a month and a half.

Just about. 130 mile/day commute and then driving all over on the weekends.

The Mobil 1 filter for the VQ is either the M1-108 or the M1-110. The 110 is an inch or so longer than the 108. The M1-108 and the Amsoil SDF 13 are the same size. The M1-110 is the same size as the Nissan OEM and the Purolator.

eric,
What are you using that crap (aka anything but Amsoil) in your Altima for?

The Altima doesn't get enough miles to worry about it that much. That and it doesn't see the abuse or stress that the Maxima does!
