hmm dont know

but I have a bel980 and love it, it also cost me $220 which is basically half the V1. Doesnt have direction and stuff like the V1, but i'm not a heavy speader and can detect the cops in plenty of time to stop.

This is the 2nd independent that rated the Bel over the V1.

I have both the Bel 980 and the Passport 8500. The Passport falses a tiny bit less, but the Bel has more features. It's a toss-up. The Bel costs $220 discount, while the Passport is $299. So... based upon the price, I give the edge to the Bel. If you get the Bel 950, you have the same peformance of the 980, except it costs only $190.

While sensitivity/range are usually the number one reason to choose a detector (duh!), I've gone with the V1 for the hardwire capability and to place the remote between my tach and speedo where I am always glancing. It's also discreet. The remote on the Passport is on the lighter adaptor and that is too far down on the console in the Max to look at when it goes off, IMO. Plus, now hardwired, I can actually plug in my phone whenever it needs charging.

There's an optional hardwire system ($29) for the Passport that will allow you to locate the indicator anywhere in the car. It doesn't have full instrumentation however.

Yeah I knew that all along, thats why I own a Bel...

I have been with people with the V1, it goes off way to often, yeah it may be sensitive but its worse to have that then one just needed to go off when its needed. Bel has one of the best out IMHO.

I think most folks might miss the point of the V1. Range is great, be frankly, anything more than the range of the V1 is too much. I can pick up K bands, literally 2 miles away. But the problem is by the time I get to where the police was, he/she might already be gone, but here I am driving way slow for a long while. Range is great, but I think 2-3 miles that the V1 gives me is long enough.

Now the point of the V1 is the direction pointer and the "boogy" counter. I didn't read the review, but I am not aware of any other detector with this feature. PLUS the best part is the V1 is upgradable... When they come up with new features/hardware, I'll send mine in for an inexpensive(relatively speaking) upgrade, instead of a new detector.

Basically, the V1 didn't fare well because the testers didn't like it-->

It's radar sensitivity is a few points off of perfect, but as they say, the unit is almost 10 years in design, once Valentine makes an upgrade, I'm more than certain that it'll be a top performer once again.
BTW, the V1 has far more programmable settings than the author wrote about. You can selectively remove bands from detection capabilities on the V1, you simply need to go to the V1 webpage and get the instructions how to. Other than that, the author/tester didn't like the ergonomics/volume control of the V1 so much. Hmmm. Sounds like I'll keep using mine, and when the upgrade becomes available, I'll have it done. I Love my V1, and that "Bogey counter" is the cat's meow, (along with the directional arrows of course)

LOL!! Who telling you guys to sell your V1-->>

All three are upgradable and two have the boogie counter.. My point is this V1 isn't the best radar detector(especially for $400) and for those who are in the market for a new detector they should do research before plunking down $400 for a detector plus what ever the cost of the upgrade it's going to get (hopefully sometime soon).

I really don't count the features when I look at test I look at detection and V1 disapointed me again.

Would you guys pay $1,000 plus for the K40??

OH yea read this #;>)-->>

Q. What does 360-degree laser mean? Is it important?

A. The ability to detect a laser from any point on the compass is meaningless in the real world. Visualize a line running axially down your vehicle’s centerline and expect an incoming laser beam to be no more than a few degrees off to either side. The devices become inaccurate at greater angles and cease working entirely beyond about 40 degrees off-center.

Q. Is a rear radar antenna important?

A. Only to a marketing department. Any detector will warn of radar coming from behind when the microwave signal reflects back to the detector from metallic surfaces inside the vehicle and from nearby cars, road signs and other structures.

All I can say is my dad bought the Escort Passport 8500 or the model VERY close to it (it was $280 from Best Buy). I live in Texas where the DPS loves to nail your a$$. We did 80-85mph from Midland, Texas to Dallas on I20 and never had even a close call. As long as you slow down as soon as you hear it go off, your good to go. I used to want a V1, but not any more.

SBH 224.95 and Smile 219.95-->>

neither of them sell the Passport 8500 yet the 7500 is not comparable to the 8500 as far as detection goes.. The 950 Bel is equal in detection as far as the 980 is concerned.

Sbhcorp.com and smilephotovideo.com

andI don't want to pick up reflections of radar waves as they bounce off something else. I want to know where the radar source is, period. The directional arrows on the V1 are great for this purpose. Case in point, this weekend, I encountered a light up roadside sign in Pa. Some of these signs have radar units on them (like Md. uses on some overpasses) Beyond the sign was a trooper just coolin on the side of the road, Ka band on) Coincicendtally, the sign was a Ka band radar as well. It's nice to know that the first threat has moved to the side and behind you, that will let you know that it was in fact the sign, and not something else. Then you can focus on the other signal which you don't know what it is until you can get a visual.
C/D had a more "technial" test in 98.

Both the Bel and the Passport 8500 are software upgradeable. The Bel was the first on the market with software upgrades. By the way, the "inexpensive" V1 upgrade costs more than a new Bel. $250!

Yeah Eben has the figures there. $219.95 is the best I've seen on the 980. They have the 950 for $180. Let me know if you find it cheaper. I sold mine on Ebay a few days ago for full price and kept the Passport 8500. I miss the digital voice and some of the features (swivel mount, voice, and a little smaller) better on the Bel over the Passport. I might return the Passport and get another Bel 950 or 980.

Re: Nothing in pointless in Laser detection-->

LOL! If you say so... And in MD we don't have boxes that just sit there and emits radar signal to fool people with radar detectors...I've told you this before that those boxes are used to transmit signals to Overhead Electronic signs.. Stop believing those urban legends..

All this staring at the radar detector really lets me know how much attention your paying to the road.. Even before this past two test I've posted I never could justify buying the V1 for the Arrows and Radar test feels the same way I do.

Appearantly you have fallen for the marketing scheme of the dual antenae ..hook, line and sinker..tsk tsk#;>)

andI don't want to pick up reflections of radar waves as they bounce off something else.

That test is a crock of ****. The only categories in which the V1 lost any significant points were sound and buttons. As for sound, all any detector does is beep and buzz, and that is all you need. The V1 isn't lacking there. Then they scored the V1 really low because it doesn't have a million buttons and useless gadgets like the others. I never touch the few buttons that it does have, so I don't care about all the buttons that the other units have. Also, they said that the display was too bright. Well, the display isn't all that bright, so I'm not sure what is wrong with their eyes. And then they blame other people's driving habits on the V1 (saying that every other speeder will follow you because you have a detector). A: I don't give a **** what people are doing behind me (and the more people there are speeding, the less chance I have of getting caught, so they can all come along, for all I care) and B: That's how it is with any detector (although I have never seen this phenomenon occur in all of my 100s of 1000s of miles of driving, so it's not a ligitiment concern). Now let's look at range. This test says that Ka detection is the most important. Well, Eben posted another test a few weeks ago where the V1 had significantly greater range than the Bel, and that test's ranges were all lower than other tests that I've seen, so I know that this test is completely wrong. So when you remove all of the ooing and ahhing over the mostly worthless features of the other units, the overall performance is about the same (the V1 still having greater range, according to other tests). And the V1 still has unique features that I'd never drive without. And excellent customer service.

So you think band defeat, automute, text display, multiple brightness modes are insignificant? I like those features. I wish the Passport had voice alert like the Bel.

The Bel and Passport killed the V1 on Ka, the most heavily used band. They also beat it slightly in K band, but not as much. The V1 only wins in X band, which is being phased out in most areas. The V1 also falsed more.

Paul you can only lead them to the water-->>

but you can't make them drink #;>) Kutos to current V1 owners. But for more V1 sales it should be upgraded asap because other detectors are detecting more for less...

Do any of those other models tell you what direction the radar is coming from? I've found this to be a very useful feature.

The price/performance issue applies to all things, not just car mods. Everyone has to decide for themselves where the best value lies.

YOu keep saying that there are no boxes on the overpasses, but I'm telling you that there are. Next time I come your way, I'll point them out to you. There are some on the Beltway, just about at every overpass, and there are no electronic signs anywhere near them.
What I see is this. I get a K or X band warning, steady state. As I approach the overpass in question it gets stronger. Approximately 1/4 mile before the overpass it goes solid tone. As you approach the Overpass, usually in the center lane, pointing down at the ground at approximately at 35-40 degree angle is a littl grey box, with a perforated grille on it. Now whether that is for electronic signs or not, it's emitting radar signals. I've been picking those things up for over 12 years of driving through your area. I wish I cojld remember one of the interchanges where they are so I could tellyou about it.

AS for the dual antenna, hey, you get what you pay for. If you are being clocked from behind, with that moving radar (DSP) and you can only pick up reflections from other objects that the radar waves are bouncing off of, you are at a disadvantage. With a rear-facing antenna, you will pick up a rearward signal just as strongly as a forward signal, it only helps buy you time.
You can't justify the extra money for the arrrow display, but hey, I can't justify the extra money to add some flashy chrome wheels to my Max either..
And you , my friend have spent far more time parked in front of a State Trooper than I have, perhaps you need 360 degree protection... LOL

Man, I want a DC party!!! PUt something together man. I'm getting married in 9 months. I wanna party with the DC Dawgs before I get hitched...

Not all of them, but it has automute and band defeat. Not adjustable brightness, but the remote display. (any lights on your detector at night will give it away, you can see red lights suspended from the windshield very easily even with tinted windows)

The only thing the V1 has over the Passport is the arrows. And those apparently are not 100% reliable. I wouldn't take the chance and rely on arrows if they are not 100%.

Re: The V1 has those features--->

The dim on the Passport can go down to a level you cannot see from outside. And if that isn't good enough, you can use the remote indicator, either the stock one that comes on the cord, or you can buy the optional indicator, which you can install anywhere in the car.

I think that text display and multiple brightness modes are worthless gadgets. My main concern in the car is driving, not farting around with quasi-computer systems. And where are you getting your information from as far as Ka ranges? If you are talking about this one test, then you need to educate yourself because, like I said, this test is wrong. Every other test that I've seen shows the V1 "killing" the other units, like the one that Eben posted a few weeks ago. Also, why do you say that the arrows are "apparently" inaccurate? Apparent to who? I assure you that they are dead accurate. My perfect driving record stands as evidence.

i woundn't but my detector from these guys unless i went into their shop. their prices are very cheap when you see them advertise in road and track and other car mags. they sell whats called grey market items. sure you can get the bel 980 for 220.00 but it has no warrenty. i bought the 855sti (retail was like 300.00) for 220.00 when it was new from them. i whet to their shop and paid a little more than what their ads in the mags were showing because i didn't want a grey market item.. plus theirs now a 990 out there.. * remember if a price is too good theres a catch
