Just wondering since my uncle is selling his '95 240 SX SE with like 30K miles on it. Always garaged, it's mint. And he is selling to me for a price where I can sell my max and buy the 240 and maybe even have a few hundred or a grand left over. I know the 240 is faster, but how much is the question. Also, is there more parts available? I heard of a turbo kit for it.

Are you sure it is faster? I have raced a 240 SE before and he was not faster. Did you race this car? Are have you driven it and just think it is faster?

Faster? No. Turbo potential? Yes! I think you should consider the 240 SX if it's a stick. You can't beat the potential of that rwd chassis and motor. I believe the 2.4 motor is pretty stout and can take some decent streetable boost. If you do a header, exhaust, sprockets, ECU, and intake, you'll be looking at mid to low 15s at best. With a turbo, anything is possible. It is a much better car to drive fast with the right mods.

Don't you mean how much faster you are over the 240?

non-turboed silvias are slow..

Stock for stock, Maxima is faster than a 240, similarly equipped. The advantage of the 240 is more mods available and of course, RWD!

I used to have a 240 like that....

My wife used to have a 240SE like you are talking about... we sold it to get the 96 Maxima...

I really like the Maxima A LOT BETTER!

The Maxima is faster than the 240 was, but the 240 (stock) does handle better than the maxima(stock). Of course, having rear wheel drive is a plus. Personally, I would rather mod the Maxima a little and still keep all of the comfort of it versus going with the 2 door 240. If you fix the Maxima up, you could get it to handle very similar to the 240 (if not better).

Stock...

The 240sx is no match for the Max as far as straight line speed is concerned. The Max just has too much of a power advantage(190hp, 208[?]lb-ft vs. 155hp, 160lb-ft).

But when it comes to curves, the 240 might win out b/c of it's great suspension and handling ability.

But if you get the turbo kit for the 240sx(F-Max makes it, HKS might have one too), you'll be able to beat a Max in all performance areas. Btw, with stock internals, the 240 should be able to boost up to at least 250hp. I also read about an Altima(same engine) with upgraded internals pushing out 350+. Go for it dude!

240 is an underpowered car. It has almost no torque (or so it feels). Used to have a 240 SE 5 speed. AT hwy speed it struggles unless you rev. The Maxima revs smoother. I give the handling edge to the 240 but it can be fickle. Overall the Maxima is a MUCH BETTER car. Plus the 240's E-brake hits you in your rt thigh. Keep your Max. Oh and the insurance is higher for the 240, and it eats more gas (even though it has the four banger).

really...i always thought the 240 was faster, but i guess not. i like it because 1) it's a five speed 2) its a coup, girls dig 2 doors. 3) it's RWD. i'd like to get a car that is late model ('95+) a five speed, at the same price as my max now and should be able to run mid to high 14's with either little or no mods. imported. thought about an eclipse turbo but i'm a big fan of Nissans. i guess i could slam a civic with a greddy turbo, but that's no fun is it now. RWD is a big point, especially if i auto-x. the SR20DET switch isn't a bad idea according to the 240 BBS. one of the most common switch and it's a straigh up one. now how much would that run if the car is going to cost me $8500 to $9K? i got offered $10.5K for the Max.

My friend owns three 240's

93,95,97. All are pretty tweaked out. He's actually getting a SR-20DET(JDM) engine this week and putting it into the 93 240. He's paying $2500 for the engine and it should be doing low 13's out the garage.
As for the performance of the US spec engine, its torquey and pulls good in 1st and 2nd but it runs out breath pretty quick. He's got i/h/e ecu,and gears and he's only putting down 140 hp to the wheels at 5400 rpms. He's best 1/4 is mid to high 15's. If you get the car don't spend too much $$ on mods, and save up and get the SR-20DET engine, its a bolt on. The best part of 240 is the handling and RWD. You should go out and buy some Option videos, 5 Silvias drifting together is awesome to watch.
I would definitely get the 240, if you're getting a good deal on it. Its probably going to be my next car if I don't get the new Turbo Impreza.

A scan of a C&D road test specs are here:

It's slower than a 95 Max.
I had a Stanza that had the same SOHC engine as the original 240SX. It's real rough and noisy compared to any Maxima engine. The 2nd gen 240SX's (the one you're talking about - DOHC, same block) has the same engine as the Altima. I'm sure it handles better than a Max, because of the lighter weight and much better weight distribution, but I never want to take a long trip in any car with that engine again.
