My 2002 Y-pipe conversion is complete!!!!!

Woo Hoo! It's finaly on there! It took me a total of 11-12 hours but at the moment I feel like it was well worth it. I counted 62 cuts on my hands and arms but they will heal

Now for the good stuff, the power and noise increase! My car sounds mean now, like it has a big V8 under the hood. I do have some drone but it's not bad, best of all there is no beas in the can noise. Now for the power, muhahaha. The car feels noticably quicker, it feels like the same power increase I got from putting a Y-pipe on my 95 and 98. Now when I go to shift to second at redline it no longer does a big peel out, it now rips the tires to shreads, lol! 3rd gear lets off a noticably louder chirp which last about twice as long. The whole power band feels better.

I will try hard to get pics up tonight for you guys to see.

Ethan, how come you didnt just convert the front precat to fedspec too? wouldnt that have been just a little more work, and maybe even more gains?

Good question, I am going to probably try to get it done on Monday. I also added a UDP pulley since my last dyno so the power gains will not be 100% accurate.

Craig Mack, I just don't floor the car in first gear unless I am going fairly straight. 2nd gear I can go WOT threw corners but I do have to be carefull because my wheel does pull pretty hard to the side. I actualy enjoy my TQ steer a little

From what I have seen it does not really help the car much. If I was to do that I would also have to relocate two o2 sensors and thats just another PITA. Doing that would also have made this a 3 day project and I can't usualy take that much time off.

dyno that beast asap we all know the UDP only adds about 2-3 whp via others dynos that are corrected. SR20DEN I think gained between 2-3 whp from his UDP.

i think us maxima guys are the only ones who call it a y-pipe. i think most people call it a down pipe or i think even a racing pipe.

I thought that downpipes were only for turbo applications? Is this the pipe that connects from your headers to the Cats?

OK... OK... I was probably wrong about 3 hp.

I give you the benefit of the doubt and say 4 hp.

Congrats!

CONGRATS E-MAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now all you need is a b-pipe and you're set! (don't worry about messing with the front manifold - it won't help at all.)

Emax,

Remember when we talked about the headers? How hard was it to remove the rear manifold? I was told you had to lift the engine a bit to get it out. How did you get it out?

If it was easy, Im soo buying headers for my maxima in 5mins.

It's also called a Y-pipe for longitudinal V8's, like the LS1's and V8 Cougars/Thunderbirds from the 80's.

You have a 2k1, right? I thought it was proven that headers didn't do anything for us. If you do get headers I hope you can do before and after dynos.

The stillen Y-pipe was $340 from avalonracxing.net , the rear manifold was $45 shipped. You also need a new manifold gasket, it cost me like 10 bucks. I also blew money on otehr things that you don't need.

SR20DEN, I used a 2000 fed spec header. Everything but the header is 2.5 inches in diameter.

sleepermax, I have a greddy exhaust which has a 2.5 inch mandrel bent B-pipe.

BigDogJonx, , I beleive I made it clear that this was extremly diffucult to do. I replied to you about the engine tilting in my other thread too.

I drove about 50 miles and every thing is working perfectly fine, no check engine lights or anything!

A Y pipe is an exhaust pipe. It comes off of your exhaust manifold and goes down to your cat converter. The reason it's a Y is because of the V6 engine in the Maxima,or any V engine, therefore there are 2 exhaust manifolds, one on each cylinder bank. Each pipe of the Y comes down and connects just before the cat converter. Hence the name Y pipe, also sometimes called downpipe, or F pipe.

Me and Jason Reynolds personally put on my Ypipe and that Ypipe in the picture loks EXACTLY like the one I had put one. Wonder what the real difference is.

I'm going to take the car in around 5 to get the car dynoed today. I am really, really hoping to see a nice increase, hopefully 225-230 FWHP and 238+ TQ (240 TQ would be awesome ).

Tony, the reason I did not wait for someone to make a Y-pipe is becuase you can not even make a true Y-pipe on a 2002. The precats can't be removed from the header. For some reason theres bolts connecting the two but the bolts will not come off.

Yeah I hope you can hit or break the 230hp barrier. That would easily make you the fastest NA '02 Max. Although I belive an Altima has already hit that.
