Nissan will build a 5spd. automatic for their next Maxima? I know that if I have the chance to buy the next generation Maxima, I would get a stick shift. However, seeing posts about overdrive on/off got me thinking. Just get rid of that darn overdrive, and offer everyone a 5spd. automatic. Better yet, maybe offer us a tiptronic type of 5spd. automatic like what you see in the Acura CL-S. If my Maxima had a tiptronic, I wouldn't complain and hate the automatic so much. Sure, it's no replacement for a true stick shift, but it's much better than trying to manually shift the automatic that I have now. I guess I have two issues here. For the next automatic Maxima, get us 1)5spd transmission, 2)tiptronic shift

A friend of mine told me that having a tiptronic shifting ability is no different than having me manually shifting my automatic as I do now. I don't think so! Having a tiptronic shifter allows you to shift manually whenever you want. The automatic I have now isn't exactly designed to be shifted manually. Am I right?

Of course I know people will just say get a 5spd. manual for your next car then! Yes, that's the plan. However, I would like to have the convenience of an automatic, yet have the ability to shift like a manual with the tiptronic. That would make my decision making harder to whether to get a tiptronic, or manual. Maybe this is just a loss cause. Somehow, I highly doubt Nissan will put a tiptronic in their future Maximas. Bummer...sorry for the long rant. Just the medicine kicking in.

Acceleration is more dependant on gearing, than # of gears.....

exactly, 5 speed auto allows for better gearing too.

Unless Nissan eliminates "smart" programming....give me a manual.

you mean "normal" auto tranny with manual shifting, you can't say "any".
cuz like the tiptronic on 911TT, it will let you hold in a gear until limiter kicks in, when you downshift, the compuetr feeds gas to blip the throttle for you to match the rev. it's like a real manual.

it doesn't make much sense as you think it would.
sure nissan car offer tiptronic, but the price will go up too, that plays against the original idea, which is to offer one of the best value as a midsize family sedan for mid 20k. when you have to spend low 30's, you might well just go with the A4, 3 series or IS300 likes.

i do give Honda lots of credit for offering the TL at $28k.
