Mileage too high?

I'm considering purchase of a 2000 SE but it has over 71,000 miles on it (sales rep.'s car). It appears to be in good condition (runs/drives fine, etc). It's a dealer-certified used car w/warranty. I could use the high miles as a reason to get the price down but, is the 71K MI too much? How many more (trouble free) miles can I expect to get out of it?

71k Miles is not big deal for a VQ. If you take care of the car, do not abuse it (as in do not mod, autox, or drag the car), you should be able to hit 200k miles.

If it has ALL the books and records, don't sweat the miles. I bought my 97 SE new and now have 240K miles on it. I'm in sales also.

That is a hell of a lot of miles! I thought I had a lot at 165,000. How does your car run?

Price?

Depends on the price. How much are they asking for it?

Being such a short time to attain the high mileage and for the fact that it was owned by a salesman you can rest assured that those are highway miles. Highway miles take their toll on a car at a fraction of what city miles would do. It wouldn't be unsafe to go ahead and call it 35k miles if it will make you feel better.
Also you could get an oil sample and send it in for analysis to be 100% certain of the engine condition even though I and everyone else in here will tell you it's probably in great shape.

I just sold a 2K SE 5 speed at 50000. I had very little probs with it. One O2 sensor and a squeaking AC fan. AC fan fixed under warranty. O2 sensor not. I had one problem that the dealer never fixed and thats why I sold it. Big lag under WOT in each gear at 4300 RPM. Dealer claimed they could find nothing wrong. I suggested a problem with the VI and they said that they could/would not work on the plastic intake manifold. Must be a common problem since several other 2K and 2K1 owners have posted that same problem on this board and Nissan went back to an aluminum VI on the 2K2s. I took the cash and bought a 96 GXE and I'm at 93000 and it runs like a top and I have 10 grand in change.

Holy crap! You have 240k? Could you list the parts you had to replace, like fuel pumps, brake master cylinder and stuff? I dont know how long stock fuel pumps and etc.. are supposed to last..

thank you!

I plan on keeping my max at least til 300k.

Excellent, our cars are just babies then, mine is at about 64k (98 SE). But I guess it's misleading because those are "city" miles. I used to live 5 miles from work but now maybe 20, so the mileage will be going up.....

It might be a 2000 SE bought in Aug of 1999 (look at vin and see date of first use/manufacture, etc). If so, they are only pushing about 24k per year. I drive about 20K per year.

I bought a similar deal on my 1992 Lumina in Jan 95. It had 62k miles on it. It turns out, it was owned by some guy driving between Augusta and Atlanta on a regular basis. The car now has 167K on it and I just can't bring myself to dump it as it is still humming along.

If this car's body and interior are excellent, and if they are giving you a STEEP discount for mileage (not just the Edmunds allowance, but the allowance AND close to wholesale on the rest), then I'd say go for it.

To me, its not worth it to save $1200 for 30k extra miles(40k vs 70k miles) if the dealer is going to charge you full Dealer retail on the sale (which is what they usually try to do). In that case, I just as soon pay the $1200 more and get those 30k miles.

When I was looking at used Maximas last year, dealers were charging the same price for cars with 60k+ miles as the private market was getting for cars with 22k miles. Given that and the fact that I had to pay sales tax to a dealer, I saved $1200 in taxes and 40k miles compared to the cars I looked at at the local car dealers. To me, there simply wasn't a big enough discount to buy a used high mileage car from a dealership.

Although 71K may not seem like many miles keep in mind as soon as you go over the 100K mark the car will become much more difficult to sell, despite what the blue book figures may be. I would suggest avoiding it unless it's a killer deal AND you plan to sell it within a year(or 20K).

I just bought a 2001 with 57K miles on it but at a really good price of $16,000 for an SE with leather, sunroof, heated seats, bose sound system. It's a lot of miles to put on the car in just one year (it was purchased first on 6/22/01 but it looks like it's a stolen car according to Carfax) but I am just going to take it for next 5 years and then get rid of it then, it should do the job for me!

I say go for it, if it's at the right price!

Maybe I did not explain it correctly but the car is not stolen anymore, it's a recovered theft vehicle meaning the police found the vehicle and the insurance company took it and aucitioned it off most likely to my dealership.

Yes Mac is correct it will be much harder to sell that car if you were to sell it in a year or so. Alot of people probably look and say 71k for a year old car and say way too many miles and want look back, although we know 71k isnt alot for the Max. I would try to find one with lower mileage personally.

Then most likely you have a salvage title and that would make it hard to resell. Your dealer should have disclosed that as such cars are worth much less.

For some reason it did not have a salvage title according to CarFax and CarFax is offering $5000 gurantee that it has a clear title. My dealer is offering me $4000 off what they been trying to sell it because of the high mileage and also because I know the manager of the dealership, personally.

Going there right now to show him the CarFax report saying it was a recovered theft, because he said he had no idea...and that the car was originally sold by him and been serviced at that dealership since. Could CarFax have made a mistake?
