body shop quote - unbelievable - any advice?

ok so if you havent heard my dilemma, here it is:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=144560

i stopped by the body shop today and pointed out the areas i wanted fixed (several dings on the right side of the car, and the major dents on the left side). we proceeded inside to total up the estimate. keep in mind that most of these are shallow dings with no paint damage. he totals the estimate at $1486.14 - THATS LESS THAN 10 DINGS AND 2 DECENTLY LARGE DENTS WITH NO PAINT DAMAGE. So I ask him to total what it would be for the 2 dents on the right (the ones my friend caused)...came up to $534.83! This guy was charging me to remvoe the tailights, the moldings, the trim, complete repaint and refinish for minor dings. after doing the math, it came up to $951.31 - JUST TO FIX ABOUT 8 DINGS IN THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CAR. Is this guy full of crap or am i just an idiot?

Yes he is. Is it a paintless dent removal place? I paid $350 for the entire car (35+ dings, dents and creases)!!! Larger dents cost more, but I wouldn't pay more than $150 per large dent.

$1500

Tom (njmaxseltd) told you not to go to a body shop! You need to go to either Ding King (as voltman pointed out) or Dent Doctor. It is normally about $100 per panel plus a little discount if you have more than 2 panels (maybe $10 off per panel). It shouldn't matter how many dents you have on the panel, just the number of panels you need worked. So go count.

Edit: Look for paintless dent removal shops in your area.

They are very good, you would not even be able to tell there was a dent in your car. And the paint is almost always perfect, if not most places will pay to repaint the door for you.

If you didn't get a 2nd opinion you'd be the latter!

If you went to get a roof done on your house, you'd get a different price from every person you talked to. Same with body work. There's something called the dishonesty factor. Another is the guestimate factor. A maxima isn't worth 1 grand to fix dings and dents when there's no exposed paint. Just leave it and save the money for something else. Plus, when a panel is repainted it's cheesy, when the car is clean one can see the repair when looking at an angle. When the car is dirty it's harder to see. Bodywork is something that should be avoided if possible, just like making insurance claims!
