Just traded in my Max...

The time has come...I Just traded my '98 Maxima with 150k miles on it for an '01 Pathfinder LE fully loaded w/ 30k miles. Got a great deal on it and wasn't raped on my trade either. Paid $20k after trade, no cash out of pocket . I needed more space but couldn't give up the performance of the engine, or ride (relative to an SUV). It's the same VQ block as the Maxima from what I understand...but somehow only 240hp...
anyone know if it can be tweaked up? Will the max mods work on it? Guess I'll have to get familiar with this new vehicle now.

Is there a pathfinder enthusiast group that anyone knows of by any chance?

Every option except the Nav system. Got $5200 for the trade, which shocked me, but It's almost flawless except for the miles I put on it...first time I haven't been screwed in a trade-in.

Something is weird about your numbers, because according to Edmunds, that would mean they gave you between 2,700 and 4,200 for your 98???? Wholly scmoley, I thought if I were to sell my car (98 SE all-options stick) I could get 8995. But somewhere in the neighborhood of 3450? Did you somehow owe money on this car??? Because even with a 5-yr loan that thing should have been paid-off. The only thing I can imagine is you bought the 98 for a pretty penny used and the resale plummetted and you still may have owed on it? Tell us more about this deal. I mean any way you slice it the Pathfinder would be 22-24k, and with the car you still paid 20.

I guess I'm not clear as to what you're asking...My car was free and clear. Maybe I wasn't explaining right.
The final agreed upon sale price for the Pathfinder was $25,300.
The amount they gave me on trade for my car was $5,200.
$25,300-$5,200 = $20,100

Tell me I wasn't robbed. I absolutely HATE buying cars, especially from dealers; you get screwed any way you cut it.

Well, I only hope you got 4WD if you paid that much, 2WD LEs with 30k go for $20-22k around here.

4WD, Leather, Sunroof, Bose 6 disc in-dash changer, dual power seats, limited slip, 17" premium wheels, class III/IV tow package...every option available except the Nav system.

so back to my original question...will max mods work on the engine as ar as intakes and ECUs?

Hmm I thought only the 2k2 Pathfinders had the 3.5 240 HP engine (same as Altima) You sure that's what your 2k1 has, or maybe they introduced that engine in 2001? Either way, nice buy.

I guess the way I see it is this--I know that dealers are greedy, they actually can make more profit on a used car than on a new one. So if it were me, I would try to buy a used car from a new car dealer for wholesale. Uh-huh, that's a price where they start screaming bloody murder, don't I deserve to make anything on this deal, I have to pay the lights etc. But I would never ever pay more than private party retail, even from a new car dealer for a used car. So the actual price is gonna be in-between, maybe about 23k on the Pathfinder. I'd want 23k - 9k trade and pay 14k difference, but I don't know that a 98 like mine could even get 9k in trade. Thing is I'd never let it go for only 5 grand, regardless if that's all that it's worth on the market. It drives better than any car you could get for 5 grand.

I think what they may have done is charge you 2300 more because they're really only giving you 2900 for your car--I'd keep your car and just pay the full amount or finance it. The trade really gives the dealers even more liberty to juggle the numbers, cause who'd pay 25.3k cash for the Pathfinder?

You should have sold that Maxima to a personal buyer even with the high mileage. They really got you because of the excessive mileage, what the avergae 98 has about 50-60,000 miles. That price on the Pathfinder seems to be a little high for a 2001 which is almost 2 years old now.

No matter what the shifty salesperson might have said, I think we all know it's pretty darn difficult to move a Pathfinder, so why would we want to even pay anywhere near retail for it? Let it sit there another 120 days or if somebody else is game let them pay 25 grand for a used Pathfinder. MDX? TL or CL? Oddysey? Yes, ok, maybe somebody else will take it if you don't. But there isn't any model of Nissan where it's a competition to buy the car!

The Pathfinder was the 1st American Nissan to get the VQ35. It's just that since SUV 4x4 is not exactly a performance platform, not as much hoopla about it.

Did you get an automatic or manual transmission? Remember, the stick has an extra 10 HP boosting it to 250...

The LEs are all auto, you can get an SE with a stick but they are very rare.

wow 150K miles is a lot of miles for a 4-year old car. That is the reason the dealer gave you so little for it, since the only way they will rid of it is to sell at the auction. Dealers (respectable) do not stock any cars with mileage above 80K. Also, selling privately, you would not have had much like, the mileage would shock ppl.
