Got VLSD 5spd? Read....

Okay, Ive had my VLSD tranny in for a few days now, and Ive noticed a few things... First off, my clutch isn't broken in yet, so Ive yet to do any hard driving, but I noticed that going around turns in 2nd, the car seems to surge a little bit... My old 96 5spd never did that...??? I also gave it a bit too much gas coming out of a turn yesterday in 1st, and got some pretty good wheel hop going as the tires broke free. This tranny only has 7k miles on it, and is from a 99 max. Has anyone else noticed any sort of surging, or a different driving feeling with the VLSD? Ive come out of a couple of turns a little too fast, speeds at which my car with the auto would have just understeered, and now it seems to flow right through them, it's just at low speeds that I get the slight surging feeling. I don't know what I'm going to do about the wheel hop at the track either...???

well i do but its from my street clutch, not my tranny...first off, when i slowly let go of the clutch when switching gears, i have a lot of positive resistance as if the car is telling me to let go so it can just unleash the dragon...

i just went over 1,000 miles today and i drive a lot smoother than ever but i chirped a few times and i'm not sure where that would hurt me but one thing i feel which i'm not sure is common is that when i shift from 2nd to third, sometimes it gets stuck and won't let me get up, as if i have to put it almost perfectly in. Maybe that part isn't fully broken in yet or i did something bad? who knows, and when it does go in, its like 2 layers of pushing, not something that will hurt driving but 1st gear is so smooth and none of the other gears are like that yet, but feel a lot better than before....

Thanks Sprint, I have the ACT, so I'm not so worried now. It does go away though right?

not really.. its gets 10 times better after break in.. but you will have to learn to modulate and slip a bit more.. if you hear a grinding noise.. you are getting there

I don't think the VLSD will work wonders for wheel hop even after the ACT gets fully broken in. If you were looking for it to solve your hop problems at the track, from what I've read about VLSDs and helical LSDs, you might be disappointed. Seem to really be just help on cornering more than anything. Maybe eric can call foul on this though.

mecca - man, from what it sounds like you've done to that clutch in it's break-in period, from like the first few posts after your conversion on, I don't know *what* I'd expect that thing to do

I have a quaife which is "similar" to the VLSD (quaife is better )

the one thing that I noticed the MOST about the quaife is that there is A LOT more wheel hop.....I think it's just something you have to live with when you get a limited-slip trans on a FWD car.

So how's the difference in launching?

I assume you can hook up better with both wheels now grabing, but if you have more wheel-hop it might be lost. Basically, is this a benefit for 1/4-mile or stop light racers?

This is exactly what i'm wondering Ice...I mean the fastest guys are running standard non-locking trannies...just look at theblue, nealoc, papasmurf, Dave B, ect. Then look at those with the quafe such as Eric Wong, he doesn't get any better times with it...

Anyone care to reiderate

The guys at Warpspeed were working on radial arm braces to help with wheel hop. It looks like they have a lot of projects on the table, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Well I knew I would get more wheel hop, but I wanted the extra turning capability, and it rains a LOT here in Seattle, so I figured that would be a bonus as well, especially when it snows here The surgin seems to be only at low speeds, in turns. It feels like the clutch is slipping and grabbing, but it's not. Ive watched the tach, which I know is not very accurate, but I also have a RSM that I use to moniter rpm, and they don't climb and drop. I don't want to feel the car idle like I would with the poly mounts, so until I get a new car (years down the road) the stock mounts stay in, though I may try playing with them to stiffen them up a little bit, like Eric posted. I just want to hurry up and get this clutch broken in so I don't have to baby it, I want it to feel normal!
