digital instrument panel won't light up

We have recently purchased a 1989 Nissan Maxima. I am not sure if it is an SE or GXE. The instrument panel is all digital with the MPH also displaying on the windshield. The right 2/3 of the panel does not light up. All that we can see are the fuel and temperature gauges. In an attempt to diagnose the problem, we used the panel dimmer switch to see if we could dim and then light up the panel. However, this only made the problem worse in that now the MPH on the windshield is so dim that we cannot see it except at night or if it is overcast. At one time, the previous owner could tap on the dash and the instrument panel would light back up. How can we diagnose the problem? What parts might be needed, etc.?
