5 speed owners- Have you ever gotten stuck in reverse?

This has happend to me a while ago. I opened my transmission and dissassmbled it in the recent few days and could not find the obvious cause of this. What happens is if I go over 5 mph or so in reverse with the clutch out the tranny will become "stuck" in reverse and not release. It also makes a horrendous metal grinding noise. To get it out, you must roll the car forwards with the clutch depressed and when it gains enough speed pop the clutch. But then this presents another problem. After I did this, I had the imfamous hesitation when starting problem.

I have another transmission to compare it to and dont know what is wrong. Maybe it is something I am over looking but nothing is bent or busted that I can tell related to reverse.

I did a search and it seems that a few others have also experienced this problem. Any others?

Yes, I have been stuck in reverse too. I think its a little weird that both our cars do this. I have not abused my tranny at all. I have to very careful when going into reverse, cause if I get stuck I have to have someone get out of the car and push it and get the car rolling forwards and pump the clutch and knock the shifer out of reverse. Anyone else experienced this? Im sure it cant just be me and eric.

Hasn't happened to me. Just the bearings problem. At 78K miles now. Bearings went at like 54K. 1997 5spd SE.

That is normal. If you read the owners manual its a safety mechanism, you have to double clutch it to get it into reverse.

But the getting stuck in reverse is not normal. I did some searching on the net and apparently this has happened to other nissan vehicles as well.

It says the solution is to replace the clutch pressure plate, but I still dont see why this would cause the shifter to get stuck.

This one seems closer to what our problem is, however there wasnt a solution.

Apparently this problem happens in the Mazda miata in the older ones. Maybe the solution is very similar to ours?
