If anybody cares- some pics of pulling gears

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/ewong61/tranny/

What happened was 3rd gear blew on me last Friday so I pulled the tranny. Fortunately, I had spare transmission parts from blowing 2nd gear last year so I decided to make one good transmission with the 2 transmissions I had. I swapped out 3rd gear off the input shaft and the main shaft. Some of the pics are bad. Some show 2nd gear stripped from my last incident. What I did, was press out the gears with a combination of pullers. Then after replacing the gear, I took the gears and bearings to a friends house with a press and we pressed them back together making sure all the tolerances were good. I forgot my camera so I didnt get any pics of pressing.

For the time being I am gonna forgo the 5th gear alteration project. After examining the 2002 FSM it does not appear that the gears will be directly interchangeable. And I'm kinda poor right now.

I don't understand how you can be breaking tranmissions so often? It's understandable if you are pushing big Hp/Tq numbers but you aren't. There are lots of SC / Nitrous (Maxima) guys who beat on their cars everyday and don't have transmission problems.
Even my tranmission which is notoriously known for being a POS holds up for at least 20k miles and it's pushing an AWD car that weighs 3600lbs, with about 350hp.

I want to start learning about tranmissions because I'd like to fix mine next time. I paid someone to do it for me this time because I wanted it done right. Just curious as to why you are running into so much trouble.

How can he keep blowing tranmissions? Simple, those tranmissions suck *****. I killed two of them in a span of 60k miles in my '98 Maxima. The last time I did it 4th gear just dissapeared and became a nuetral. I wasn't even powershifting at the time it died.

By the way Eric, if you need any more RS5F50A tranmissions parts let me know. I know who has the last one I killed. The only thing broken in it is 4th gear.

I just noticed you took this thing apart on top of a Nissan sales add....LOL

Also, if you're interested I can probably get some Kevlar synchros made for you to replace those crappie brass ones but they will be very expensive.

I was thinking the same thing, it's amazing how people do this stuff. There's something beautiful about a picture of a disassembled transmission sitting on a soda box in your kitchen.

Manual transmissions are pretty uncomplicated. I just rebuilt the one I bought for my ongoing conversion project, and it was no big deal, much less complicated than an engine rebuild. Still, the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction from doing it is pretty gratifying. As is the thought that some mechanic out there is going a little bit hungrier tonight because I did it myself. Heh heh, just kidding - I'm not that heartless.

Let us look closely at the last sentence in this paragraph shall we, "I wasn't even powershifting at the time it died." Just because the tranny broke while your were at part throttle doesn't mean you had already damaged the transmission prior to that. The T-56 in the F-Body/Vette/Viper is a pretty stout tranny (rated to 450-500 ft/lbs), but I know of plenty of guys who've busted them while powershifting on mildly modified motors in F-Bodies. Vipers munch the T-56s quite often. If you race it and beat on it enough, it will break. I can guarentee you that. Nothing is "bullet proof" under regular abuse, especially factory parts. If you race the car, expect things to break. That's racing.

Wow, that made way too much sense. Thank you for being the voice of reason.

I do agree with the others here, though. Eric, you have quite a talent for rebuilding trannies. You make it look easy...almost like something I could do (nahhhh). It's nice to see pics of the whole thing disassembled...thanks for the pics.
