Fitment should be fine. Mount them and run them. If there is rubbing of suspension components, and 5mm spacers.

I have 235/45/17 on the Lexus GS400 17X8 wheels with a 50mm offset and there was a little rubbing when u-turning. It wasn't bad though. I wouldn't imagine you running into any problems.

His worry about the wheel being too wide and the offset. Should he return the rims and exchange the a different one that will fit better.

Can you suggest the best combo.

The best combo would be 17x8 with 35mm offset running 235/45/17 tires...that is "best" IMHO.
Your setup should work just fine. I am not so sure about 45mm offset, especially, the 8" wheel width. If you had 7" wide rims, they should fit A-okay.
Like voltman suggested, try 'em on & if they rub, you WILL need some spacers, atleast 5mm.
