not changing oil = check engine light?
#1
This morning, I started my car and the check engine light came on. I'm assumed it was the result of me not changing my oil.
It has been nearly 5k miles since I changed it due to school and finals and holidays.
So this afternoon I took it to be changed and the light is still on.
Would not changing my oil for nearly 5k miles result in the check engine light coming on?
Nothing else has been wrong in the car so far. The only thing that I've done differently is put in premium gas the last two times I've gassed up.
I'm sorta worried but gonna leave my car alone for the night and see if the check engine light is still there in the morning.

the light has nothing to do with the oil change interval.

Nope. The Nissan check engine light is not in any way connected to the condition or mileage of the oil. The only light regarding the oil is the idiot light for the a low oil level. Check engine lights for nissan are related to the engine's emission control system. This covers alot of systems but not all. And 5k for an oil change is not that long at all.

The Check engine light wouldn't go away until it's resetted. In the mean time, you'll need a mechanic to look at the car, to hook up a OBDII scanner to find the diagnostic code, to see what's wrong.
Since the engine light is one, the ECU is on its backup safety mode (a set of pre-determined inputs in the ecu, ignoring the sensors).
Get it checked out soon.
